Painting advice needed

Hi

Im looking for some advice about painting railings,

the railings have a ball in the middle and a spear head / point at the top

at the moment the railings are painted black whilst the ball and point are black with gold / bronze colour coming through if that makes sense it could be a sort of distressed look , now what i need to know is how do i achieve that effect when i re paint them,

 

some one mentioned that you paint the point gold / bornze let it dry then cover it in black and whilst the black is still wet use a cloth to wipe some of the black off leaving the gold / bronze coming through.

 

is this right nay help appreciated
