Sheffield Hallamshire Pharmacy computer problems ???

This Friday just gone I had to go up to the Royal Hallamshire Hospital to collect my father in law who had a problem with one of his eyes.

 

I met him in the eye clinic and the staff there dealt with him very well.

 

The bit about the NHS where I get a little confused is the next bit.

 

We then go down to the pharmacy area with a ticket similar to the meat counter at Morrisons and then we have a wait on.

 

We have a certain ticket number and the machine shows number

9 tickets prior to that one.

 

We are then told by other patients already waiting that the computer isnt working so the staff are going to shout out the numbers instead.

 

We then waited for a lot longer than it took to be dealt with by the eye dept.

 

When he got up to ask where we were in the queue as we had been waiting so long he came back with his script in his hand and we left the hospital.

 

When we got to the car he told me he had been given three options at the counter which were as follows;

 

1. The computer is broken and we dont know when we you will get served.

 

2. You can collect your script on Monday.

 

3. Which is what really gets me annoyed so SORRY FOR SHOUTING.

 

4, If you pay for it now you can take it away with you which he did.

 

When we get to the car he tells me what has gone off and then I get really annoyed on the way home.

 

I have to ask some questions of the after care. ??

 

1. If the pharmacy computer is broken, then fair enough.

 

2. If it is broken why will it take till Monday morning to sort the prescription out ??

 

3. More importantly why by paying there and then for the medication will the system get any quicker. ??

 

This is quite simply a case of the pharmacy dept taking the **** !!

 

Why should a bottle of eye drops that would be readily avaliable on the shelf for free for a pensioner be delayed for two to three days when if they pay for them the drops suddenly appear. ?

 

The answer is simple, the eye drops were quite clearly there from the start and I shall be writing to the Hallamshire for an explanation as I have issues already with the Hallamshire and the quality of care they provide.

 

I shall for one be wanting to know if my father in laws payment for the early release of his script went to sorting out the computer error or wether that money went elsewhere ???

 

I also know personally one of the non executive board of directors through my current employment and he can get ready the next time I see him. !!!

I took my 16 year old daughter to the a@e at the hallamshire about a month back.

We waited for an hour after getting our ticket and seen as there wasnt anyone else in the waiting room i went to ask what the hold up was to which i was told that there isnt any doctors there only nurses so she isnt going to be seen and we would have to go to the northern general fair enough but why not tell me this when i came in.

So we went to the a@e at the northern general waited there for a few hours got her in to see somebody they went to talk to someone else about what was up with her and came back an hour later and told us we would have to take her to jessops for tests and gave us the name of the ward to go to.

We got to jessops which was all but shut but we found a door open around the side so we went in and wondered around for half an hour(with out being questioned once what we were doing there) untill we found someone to ask how we got to this ward to which we were told your in the wrong hospital and should be across the road at the hallamshire .

So of we go again to the hallamshire to look for this ward where they can find out whats up with my daughter.

We find the ward and go and speak to the women whose in charge(i think they used to be caled matrons) and she gives a look of shear amazement and says to us why didnt they send you here in the first place by this time it is 1am in the morning we first got to the hallamshire at about 2.30pm in the afternoon.

How can such a big and important place be run so inefficiently its absolutely disgusting.

I do feel sorry for people who lived in the days before computers. Because according to the NHS, obviously before computers, no-one ever got served anywhere!

Regardless of whether the computer is working or not - hospital pharmacy departments must be the far least efficient of all hospital departments. Having to deal with this department on a daily basis at the hospital where I work, I can reliably inform those who are interested that they are slow and poorly organised.

So many people waiting for discharge from hospital have their departure significantly delayed waiting for medication to take home. Despite the nurses best efforts of ensuring scripts are written by doctors and promptly faxed to the pharmacy department, patients are often waiting 3 hours or more for their medication.

This often has the knock-on effect of delaying the admission of patients waiting in A& E and other areas.

If you write to the hospital, it will probably take the same path around the hospital that you took.

 

People need to log complaints, because its only then that things have a hope of getting better, besides hospitals have a complaints target, so you may as well give them something to count.

via the use of a TARDIS i presume ? ( there hasn't been an Emergency Department at the Hallamshire for voer 10 years...)

 

We waited for an hour after getting our ticket and seen as there wasnt anyone else in the waiting room

 

doesn't mean the clinical area isn't full though does it ...

 

i went to ask what the hold up was to which i was told that there isnt any doctors there only nurses so she isnt going to be seen and we would have to go to the northern general fair enough but why not tell me this when i came in.

 

if you asked " when will i see the Doctor?" that is the answer you will get from both the MIU and the WIC , both of which are Nurse led environments ... your choice expert post graduate specialist (Nurse practitioner or emergency Care Proactioner ) or spotty youth ( FY2 / SHO)...

yes becasue the Obs and Gynae provision for STH is at the Jessop wing and on F+G floors in the RHH tower ...

 

out of hours the entrance to to the Jessop wing is primarily for labour suite etc

 

We got to jessops which was all but shut but we found a door open around the side so we went in and wondered around for half an hour(with out being questioned once what we were doing there) untill we found someone to ask how we got to this ward to which we were told your in the wrong hospital and should be across the road at the hallamshire .

So of we go again to the hallamshire to look for this ward where they can find out whats up with my daughter.

A glossary for those who don't have the benefit of NHS or emergency care experience:

MIU Minor Injury Unit

WIC Walk In Centre

FY2 Foundation Year 2 (a sort of junior doctor)

SHO Senior House Doctor (a less junior doctor)

STH Sheffield Teaching Hospitals

RHH Royal Hallamshire Hospital

ECP Emergency Care Practitioner (a sort of combination paramedic/nurse)

 

IIRC If I Recall/Remember Correctly

TLA Three Letter Acronym

TARDIS Time And Relative Dimensions In Space

 

I was under the impression that the foundation year system has replaced the HO and SHO levels? so FY2 = SHO?

But you can get a specialty SHO in anesthetics for example and these are not FY2 doctors. So I guess FY2s or F2s as we call them are still doing their rotational training.
