  1. Our crossbreed rescue dog, Jack, was called Geoff in the kennels where we got him from... Not too bad I suppose..... An ex's daughter called her hamster Dorian (from the novel The Picture of Dorian Grey)..... Another ex called her cat Nudge.... Barmy, lol
  2. This is swiftly developing into a slugfest over symantics .... 1: I'm not admonishing you at all.... You have your opinions and I have mine but there is a majority of opinion out there including many professional/media individuals involved in the sport of the same opinion I cut and pasted the article to support my opinions alone but if hemp isn't classed as a particle then I don't know what is!! It's not that I think I know more than others (everyday's a school day!!!) I didn't suggest your statement wasn't valid, I said it was valid - to you!!! And also that you should carry on doing as you are as that's entirely your call. I think we should agree to disagree on this matter and leave it be as this appears to be getting off topic. As for Specsavers, they already have had enough of my cash but I'll still be on the lookout for the new X-ray range !!
  3. Ok Jethro, I'll give you that the article doesn't mention specifically that uncooked hemp causes fish deaths but I'd like to point your attention to the first section of my cut/paste text... The mention of carp "rolled over" with hemp stuck in their digestive tract reads to me that the fish died or how else would the article author know the fish had hemp in the digestive tract??? X-ray anglers fishing specs there aint anywhere on the market!!! I appreciate that your reasons/methods are valid to you and that you have every right to carry on as you do with your methods. Someone did mention putting hemp in a flask and leaving overnight after covering with boiling water and sealing. This does work also and you are able to include any flavourings you might wish to add as I've tried this method also as well as boiling the seed and you don't have the missus bashing your ear re the smell. As for twaddle, well everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I'd rather err on the side of caution when using hemp in my groundbait etc..... Good luck with the fishing
  4. Ok Jethro.... Hope this helps.... Cut and pasted from BFW (Barbel Fishing World)... Particular interest in this case to first and second sections.... Have read this in other forums/other sources too people..... Urban myth or total truth, I dunno but I tend to err on the side of caution where fish/fishing is concerned Re: Uncooked Hemp?? 1. Just about all (angling) Particle suppliers recommend cooking of all particles. This was a big issue in Carp Fishing some time ago, after Carp rolled over with expanded particles (not hemp) stuck in their digestive tract. I remain convinced that all particles should be prepared appropriately, which includes some form of cooking - scalding is sufficient with some correctly prepared particles. 2. Uncooked particles can germinate after passing through fishes digestive tract (lucky fish - they got shot of the possibly expanding items). Some go beyond germination, take root and grow. Depends on the plants preferred growing environment, which ones do. 3. Hemp as Snails. Don't buy into the theory. Barbel like many fish feed by scent as much as sight - those barbules have receptors that "equate" to smell. No way is hemp, cooked or otherwise, going to produce the amino-protein trail of a snail colony. And sight in murky, cloudy water or at night? So the visual resemblance aspect of the theory does not seem right either. 4. Hemp is attractive to fish with a potent scent signal. as it happens to be small (and usually in sizeable clumps) they deploy the same feeding behaviour as with other small food items, such as snails which are small and found in sizeable clumps. 5. Hemp good for fishes digestive tract? Maybe, but even cooked the crunchiness is hardly diminshed. Do you remove all the seed husks? The crunchy texcture may act asa scouring agent. 6. Beneficial properties of the hemp? Perhaps some are denatured through boiling - some of more volatile essential oils in particular. But the main usable digestive content (the seed kernel) becomes more accessible to the fast acting digestive tract once the seed is split. The pharyngeal teeth are only going to crush open a small percentage of unsplit.
  5. As far as I know, uncooked hemp can swell in the digestive tract of a fish, possibly causing a blockage and a potential for the fish to expire.... That's the reason I wouldn't use uncooked hemp.... That's my understanding and it's supported by reading to confirm my thoughts Hope this helps Additional - This is the same for other particle baits - tiger nuts, pigeon feed, maize/sweetcorn etc.... Particle baits in an unprepared state, are in most circumstances, hard as it's usually dried in order to preserve it or give it a shelf life. Think about it this way, before the stuff that's used as bait/feed was used by anglers, it more than likely had a previous useage.... The most obvious I can think of is pigeon feed..... Before it was used for feeding birds it more than likely had another use but that I don't know so can't comment on..... Maize (an ingredient of some animal feeds) or sweetcorn is cooked before it's tinned/frozen for human consumption. Corn is soft as it comes off the cob but in order to use the seed for replanting, it's dried to give it longevity so it can be stored until the next growing season.... That's how most seed crops are kept and stored for the next planting including wheat, barley, rye etc.... this is my slant on it and I welcome those in the know either putting me right or adding their thoughts
  6. Guy I work with fishes there on a regular basis after work (evenings).... Pays nowt, parks outside on verge, catches pike most days using spinner (had an 8lb'er last night at last knockings)...
  7. White vinegar and salt mixed in a sprayer also makes an excellent weedkiller.... Woldn't have believed it until I tried it..... Makro does white vinegar in 5 ltr containers
  8. Bit late I know Beth but I'd do as Ecko says.... but with one addition..... Marinade them in the sauce for at least 12 hours in the fridge and roast them slowly on a low-ish heat..... I do that prior to bbq-ing my belly pork strips
  9. No worries, just asking that's all...... Hope it goes ok
  10. Where?? Wybourn??? Unit near old Hyde Park flats??? Always found Jolleys good for hemp but a bit hit and miss with prep and splitting.... Can you get pigeon feed from Cricket Inn pet supplies
  11. Showing some ignorance here but @ eckorob.... Why would you need to inform the council (I presume you mean the local council???) when the EA have control over fish movements from water to water?? Sounds like a reasonable exploit marieh30565 for carp anglers, good luck!!!!
  12. Many thanks jethro..... tinfolihat, cheers for that piece of info too All appreciated
  13. Cheers sheff 13... Would that be Bankside down on Holbrook Industrial estate???
  14. Re-kindling my interests in fishing so having been out of the area for a decent while and only back for the last few years, I'm looking for good tackle shops who stock a fair range of kit but more so, excellent bait (by bait, I mean your bread & butter stuff of maggots, casters and the like). I'm on the south side of Sheffield and my closest shop in relation to my favoured fishing is 6am in Swallownest... Any suggestions please????
  15. Froggi does realise that the post was by nature not very helpful unless you are unaware of the fact of EA baliffs enforcement powers!!!!.... I was merely pointing out that a EA baliff has the same powers as an officer of the law... The OP admitted guilt (as I read in his postings) and as such took his/her punishment.... Some other, less informed people, could have argued the toss and been "slapped" with much more!! The EA license allows an angler to fish 2 rods on one issue, 3 or 4 rods have to be covered by further license purchases In my opinion (and this is my opinion I might add before I get jumped on by anyone else), fishing more than 1 rod is a bit much.... In general, we have 2 hands and usually need both to use a rod and reel/pole effectively or it is in my experience when fishing... Fishing carp lakes and such is all well and good but if multiples of rods are used and more than one take/run occurs at the same time (unusual but it happens) then surely one fish could possibly suffer for that lack of attention by said angler???? As anglers therefore you have a responsibility to ensure that the fish you engage in capturing are unharmed as far as reasonably possible, returned to the water in the same state as when captured and by buying the EA license ensure that waters are maintained in a manner that reflects this purchase. Some people are more than likely going to disagree, in fact I bet most reading this will, but I've said my piece. If I offended the OP then I apologise and for those who didn't know what I stated in my post to be fact are wiser now
  16. Sorry but a water authourity baliff has the same powers as a copper in relation to fishing offences... Sorry but you were in the wrong......It's tough but you have to take the punishment if you're going to flaunt the law!!!
  17. Don't go to Broadfield Mowers!!! They know nowt..... Took a McCulloch strimmer in there for a plug and a line spool.... Firstly, the bloke couldn't find it on 2 lists on the computer.... They then they took it in back to fit the plug and line spool.... 10 mins later while I was cooling my jets (I was supposed to be working at the time and was on my way to a job when I passed) the item came out with the curt statement "Must be a cheap Chinese import, and anyway we haven't got a generic spool to fit it". After I finished work for the day, I got home and opened up the laptop and after no more than 15 mins of searching, I found the model (not a cheap import by the way!!!) along with the part numbers and at £10 cheaper.... Oh and I downloaded the manual from the McCulloch website too so I know the part numbers are correct and that it's not an import... I'd prefer to poke my eyes out with a spoon than take anything back there!!!!
  18. Our apple tree, although quite young and small (approx 2 metre-ish) produced apples last year but this year has no sign of fruit at all despite some blossom..... Also, I have noticed that all the "wildings" by the road are showing little or no signs of fruit. We have plum trees and a pear tree which are both showing fruit at the moment but nothing on the apple tree..... Has anyone else this same issue or observed as I have??
  19. @Grantos01.... As said previously in this thread, you have taken a deal of flak and fair play to you for taking it on the chin and responding in a positive manner.... Many others wouldn't have..... You have my best wishes with this and good luck
  20. Dogs are not the problem with so called "dangerous breeds", it's the owners in the majority of cases and the need for "status pets" IMHO..... But back to this case, as previously stated in this thread, the owners of the other dogs, which were on leads (therefore under control) were acting as responsible dog owners. The OP was the person at fault here I'm afraid and while Archie might be a friendly animal, other dogs can and will revert to a threat response when faced with a "loose" dog situation..... We always either take hold of Jacks (our dog) harness, which he always wears during his walks or reclip his lead when another dog is either coming towards us or in close proximity and divert his attention when possible, unless we are surprised which may happen from time to time.... Really the only way to stop this sort of situation is to be vigilant at all times or keep your dog on a lead at all times, sorry
  21. As far as I know scaffolding companies have to discard damaged or broken boards. You could try the scaffolding companies in and around where you live (if there are any that is).... Nearest larger firm is probably CD Scaffolding, near the old Asda site at Orgreave, Sheffield.... Try there
  22. No one.....!!! Their pay would go back into the coffers and no self-serving individual will be sponging off the council tax payers.... Again!!!!
  23. I absolutly love Lincoln as a place to visit and would go back again anytime of year EXCEPT during the Christmas Fair for the reasons given previously. I like this wander around and look at things that peak my interest, however, more people than I would deem safe, over-priced food and drink, car parking (park and ride at £15!!!!) and a "prescribed" route isn't what I'd call a fun outing.
