  3. Well, now that we've done our first two markets, I am happy to report that we had a lot of very positive comments from people trying the samples, and I'm pretty sure the majority of those people were non-vegans, so I reckon we're doing it right . After all, you can't argue with good cake. That's my theory, anyway. After being sent home halfway through the Devonshire Market today due to flying gazebos (not mine!), we'll now be at the Totley Christmas Market tomorrow (Sunday 15th) instead! Also at Buxton Farmers Market on the 23rd December selling all sorts of Christmassy foods. If you are interested in where we'll be in future, look us up on Facebook or twitter (search for Food to Include) for updates (and gratuitious food photos).
  4. Hi everyone, Just wanted to let people who are interested in vegan, dairy-free and/or egg-free food know that there are some new opportunities to buy vegan cake (and some baked savoury foods) in Sheffield! There will be a 100% vegan cake/baked savouries stall at the Nether Edge market on Sunday 8th December, and also at the Devonshire Market on Saturday 14th December. There will be free samples so you can try before you buy! The Sheffield Country Market in Broomhill on Saturday mornings is now also stocking vegan cakes and savouries. More details about all the above here: http://www.foodtoinclude.co.uk/vegan-market-stalls/ Thanks!
  5. Jacket potato place in the Oasis (jacket potato and baked beans = standard vegan option), also there's a curry place in the Oasis that does vegetable curry but I don't know if it's vegan or not.
  6. Can anyone give me the phone number of the recovery centre?
  7. My friend had her car nicked from Walkley on Thursday evening, it's a white Proton, reg J571 DYA. It's most likely someone took it for a ride and then dumped it somewhere. If anyone sees it, could you please let me and/or the police know. It's quite a distinctive-looking car, in fact it looks like this: http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewPicture&friendID=126327001&albumId=200710 Thanks!
  8. I'm a vegan drunk! Only occasionally though, not all the time. And I'm not for sale. The Dram Shop at Commonside has a good selection of vegan wines and beers, they might have other types of vegan alcohol but I don't know as I only tend to buy wine and beer myself.
  9. Anyone know if they do vegetarian main dishes? There don't appear to be any on the menu, but would they do one of the main dishes on the menu with mixed veg instead of meat?
  10. Las Iguanas in West One, Sheiks on Glossop Road, Pizza Express on Devonshire Street (veggie pizzas minus cheese), Royal Spice in Walkley. I've not been to The Bohemian yet but it looks nice and atmospheric from the outside.
  11. First part of the day riding off the road to learn the basics of controlling the bike, practising how to do junctions, hill starts (essential skill in this part of the world!), cones, emergency stop, etc. and second part of the day riding on the road with an instructor. It's all stuff you need to learn anyway to ride a bike. It's not a test but if the instructor thinks you're sufficiently competent by the end you get your CBT certificate, that allows you to ride on the road on your own on a learner-legal (generally 125cc or smaller) bike with L-plates. The CBT was brought in to stop people killing themselves by buying motorbikes and riding on public roads with no training or prior experience whatsoever. Your car driving licence will act as a provisional driving licence for motorbikes but you need to have the CBT certificate to be allowed out on the road.
  12. This weekend! Concerts, ceilidhs, sessions and workshops, at or around the Burton Street project (nr Morrison's) in Hillsborough.
  13. Maybe I have a cake obsession... I'm making cakes to take to work for my colleagues tomorrow. Vegan cake is fun because no-one ever suspects it's possible to make really nice cake without milk or eggs, particularly not cheesecake or light and fluffy chocolate cake. My colleagues are so funny, when I brought cake for my birthday they ate it all, said how good it was, then realised it was mine and then got really confused as to how I'd managed to make sponge cake with no eggs and cheesecake with no dairy products . And after work I'm playing and sound engineering at a festival, fortunately I'm not too weak and pale to lug PA systems around every weekend!
  14. That's what we tried to explain to our relatives when we got married and explained that we would like everyone to write us a nice card and take some photos for us instead of giving us Stuff - guess what, we ended up with piles of Stuff anyway which is all sitting in a cupboard at my parents' house because we have no space/need for it at the moment...
  15. I learned with Bikesafe and thought they were really good - maybe it depends which instructor you get? You need to do the CBT before you can ride on the road (legal requirement), it only takes a day to do though so not a big deal.
  16. Baked like jacket potatoes and served with spicy peanut butter: http://books.google.co.uk/books?hl=en&id=MSKjONWYksoC&dq=world+food+cafe+2&printsec=frontcover&source=web&ots=H1RUe9nWMB&sig=t9BXchYSR_ySlq_D2eIWvfQzU6s&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=5&ct=result#PPA40,M1 Very nice combination of flavours, and you can just leave the chilli out if you're not into spicy.
  17. I'm vegan and very happy with my decision to be vegan, couldn't imagine living any other way. I also love food and cooking and I've found that since going vegan I've become a more creative cook than before and discovered lots of new ingredients and recipes to try out. I was vegetarian for about 9 years before going vegan but was brought up as a meat-eater with a fairly standard diet, my parents were never vegetarian. I did like the taste of meat when I was a meat-eater, but eventually I decided my reasons for wanting to be vegetarian were more important than liking the taste of meat. Now I haven't eaten it for so many years that my brain doesn't consider it to be food any more, to the point where I'm wary of meaty-looking non-meat products (such as Chinese dishes with seitan/mock duck), unless I've bought them and seen the packaging for myself... In response to the original question, I haven't really noticed much difference with food prices, of the things I regularly buy the price of bread has gone up but haven't noticed much else. I do get a vegetable box delivery which might explain why I'm not spending much more on vegetables recently.
  18. Does anyone know if there's anywhere to take textiles (worn out clothes) for recycling in Sheffield? I don't want to put them in a clothing bin as they're not fit for anyone to wear. Did a search already but all I found was a rumour that there may or may not have been a textile recycling bin at Waitrose in 2006! Ta.

  20. Hey, just remember that everyone there is going to be on your side, they're coming to see you get married and support you and they'll all be wishing you well. No-one is going to criticise you if you look a bit nervous, chances are they won't be able to tell the difference between nerves and happy emotional-ness anyway! When you're saying your vows, just concentrate on your OH, you're saying the vows to each other not to the people watching. I'm not one for being the centre of attention so I do sympathise. Also on the day remember you'll have your OH there to support you!
  21. Another vote for chilli on jacket potatoes! I sometimes do chickpea mayonnaise - mashed chickpeas mixed with (vegan) mayonnaise, sweetcorn, cider vinegar, salt and pepper and a bit of oil. The idea was based on tuna mayonnaise, the vinegar and the texure of the mixture make it a bit tuna-like, and if you add linseed oil you get extra Omega 3s too. Recipe here: http://www.cookingforvegans.co.uk/cooking/meals/tunaandsweetcorn.html Spicy houmous is also a good topping, never tried making any but I had it once from a jacket potato shop. I had baked sweet potato with spicy peanut butter for my tea tonight. The original peanut recipe involves plain peanuts roasted with about 15 different spices - tonight's easy version was made with a bag of dry roasted peanuts (the sort already coated in spices but not salted) whizzed up in a food processor, with a bit of cinammon and a couple of whole dried chillies added, mixed with some melted margarine. It is really nice with sweet potatoes but probably wouldn't work so well with normal baking potatoes.
  22. Cadellin - English ceilidh band We are a Sheffield-based English ceilidh band who regularly play for weddings. We come with our own caller so our ceilidhs are suitable for audiences who have never done ceilidh dancing before, we also provide a PA system and sound engineer. More info, including sound clips, on our website: http://www.cadellin.co.uk We're also happy to offer advice to anyone considering booking a ceilidh band even if you're not ready to book a band yet or haven't definitely decided to have a ceilidh, contact details are on the website.
  23. Also there's a really nice chocolate ice cream called B'Nice which is dairy free but tastes the same as normal chocolate ice cream, they don't stock it in supermarkets but I know you can get it from Beanies on Crookesmoor Road.
  24. Try making cakes etc. but use non-dairy milk (e.g. rice/soya/oat/almond) and non-dairy margarine instead of dairy products. They taste just the same as if they'd been made with cow's milk, especially stuff like chocolate cake where it tastes mainly of cocoa and sugar whatever else you put in it.
