  1. Hi Rod, Hope you're keeping well. I can't believe that Rex or Glenda would ever want to scare you. You must have done something to annoy them?
  2. I was a good friend of Derek Blades until I left for Australia in 1964. Derek then was about 25 y.o. We lived in Meersbrook, and Derek lived with the Hill family in Rushdale Rd. Would love to make contact if he's still around. My name is Ed Harvey.
  3. I'm sure my grandparents, Harry & Maggie Coward lived there. Their children were, Margaret, Flo, Lily, Winnie ( My mom ), June, Frank & Joe. In the 40's they moved to Erskine Rd, on the Arbourthorne.
  4. Graves Park.....bitterly cold.....ZIPS HAD'NT BEEN INVENTED !!! Chilblains.....unbuttoned flies all the way home.
  5. Hi, My grandfather ( James Harvey ), was head Brewer at the Sheffield Free Brewery in Queens Road. Main brand was Matchless Ales. Other members of the family worked there, and occupied 3 houses in Queens Rd. I think it was taken over, and closed down in about 1950. I proudly own a Matchless Ales beer mat. Kind Regards, Ed Harvey.
  6. I would trade McCabe for Red and White stripes without a moment delay! Anyone agree?
  7. Hi, My Dad went to Lowfield school. His name was Stan Harvey, and he lived in Queens Rd, where his dad was head brewer at the Sheffield Free Brewery, which was next to the tramsheds, where the river Sheaf went under Queens Rd. He would have started school in around 1914/15, and did all his schooling there. Regards, Ed Harvey, Melbourne, Australia.
  8. Hi, Just talking about PCL yesterday. My mother worked there before we migrated to Oz in 1964. Her name was Winnie Harvey, and her great friend, who always kept in touch, but sadly died recently, was Alice Hartley. Mom had great memories of PCL, and the people who worked there.
  9. Hi Crookesy, Probably just a coincidence, but you're not Bob Crookes who worked at Pickering's in the early 60's are you? With Mr Clarke, Revill, and myself, Ed Harvey, til I migrated to Oz in 1964. Be good to hear from you, I remember you well, especially your love for cricket, and connection with The Parkhead Cricket Club.
  10. Hi, I was born in Sheffield, ( Meersbrook ), and sailed for Melbourne in 1964. My wife and I visit W.A. frequently, as eldest daughter and family live in Woodridge. We have 3 teenage grandkids there, and look forward so much to our visits. My name is Ed Harvey, and I went to Carfield Primary, then High Storrs, then worked at Jos.Pickering & Sons before migrating at age 21. Love it here. Regards to all Forumers.
  11. Hi, I had a schoolpal who worked at Balfour's in the early 1960's. His name is Glyn Whelan. I lost touch after emigrating to Australia in 1964. It would be good to get in touch again. Can anyone help? My name is Ed Harvey. Thank You.
  12. Hi, Back in the 50's I had a good pal who went to Central Tech. I lost touch, moving to Oz in 1964, but if anyone knows Malcolm ( Mac ) Wright, I'd love to get in touch with him again. My name is Ed Harvey. Thank You.
  13. Hi Dave, Don't seem to be able to locate Mac; hopefully someone somewhere ?? Duffems, he lived at No 87, which was next door to Cooper's on the corner of Kent Hill. Back to Dave, we're all fine. Cynthia's fine, and sends her best wishes. Watched SUFC last night, live on Satanta. Can't tell you how disappointed I was! Some of the players an embarassment.....Mr Bean would do better. If they are seriously considered for promotion, well....we used to play a better standard in Graves Park, in the fifties ! Hope you and yours are all well. How can I Email you to tell you more? Take Care. Best Wishes, Ed H.
  14. I grew up in Meersbrook, and emigrated to Australia in 1964, age 21. One of my best friends as a kid, was Malcolm Wright who lived in Upper Valley Road. It would be nice to get in touch. Are you out there Mac? Regards, Ed Harvey.
  15. Hi Rod, Deeply saddened to hear your news. Ironside Rd, Parson Cross, Worksop, Balwyn, Templestowe, Croydon. So many Happy Memories. Rest Peacefully dearest Glenda. Ed, Jan & Family.
  16. I remember it well. Great club, with lots to offer the community. Joined in about 1959, ( still have a membership card tucked away in a drawer somewhere ). As a teen in the early to mid 50's, I was good friends with Neil Newton, whose father was the licensee at the time. Celebrated my 21st there, Dec 1963, before migrating to Australia in 1964. Sad to see places like that hardly exist any more.
  17. Hi Duffems, Yes, Shaw's had the fruit shop. John was the son, and 5 or 6 yrs younger than me. Before Shaw's it was Hartley's, who were mad Wednesdayites. They had a red setter dog named Dooley, and old man Sam wouldn't eat bacon Because it was red and white. Robinson's the grocer, ( Ronnie & Ursula ) had a son Peter, I think a year older than me. Across from them was Harry Roberts the butcher. They had a daughter Pauline, about my age. I think the Johnnie Hill you mention was Ron Hill, he was about 3 or 4 yrs older than me, and lived almost across from Richards newsagents. Carfield Primary was a great school, except for the climb up & down Kent Hill a couple of times a day. Good exercise. I had a younger sister, Cynthia, and a younger brother, Frank. Do you remember them? Take care. Regards, Ed.
  18. Hi Duffems, Nice to hear from you. I feel as if I should know you, as I have read many of your comments. If your other half was at 47 U.V.Rd. he must have been close to Ken Collis, and also Derek Billard. We were next door to the fruit shop, across from Ronnie Robinson the grocer, and Roberts the butcher. Directly opposite us was the bombed building, which was home to many fantastic bonfires through my young life. Take care. Regards, Ed H.
  19. Hi, My name is Ed Harvey. I lived at 110 Rushdale Rd., 1942-1964, when we emigrated to Australia. Meersbrook was a great place to grow up. The brook itself was a natural playground. In those days you could actually catch trout by tickling them. we caught sticklebacks, made touchburners, waded through the rat infested tunnel for a dare. Follow it up past the allotments, behind Rose Cottage on Cat Lane, and up through the woods. What a wonderful playground. The only dangers were rival gangs, we would yell threats to each other, then go our separate ways. Meersbrook Park was great for football, cricket, tennis, and especially sledging in Winter. I went to Carfield Primary, then High Storrs. My closest friends were Phil Selkirk, Dave Edwards, Ron Richardson, Malcolm (Mac) Wright. Does anyone know what happened to Mac? He lived at 87 ? Upper Valley Rd.Look forward to more about Meersbrook. Regards, Ed H.
  20. Hi Davided, This is Ed H. I lived at 110 Rushdale Rd, Left for Oz in 1964, then age 21. What great memories the brook evokes. Tickling trout, (some up to 11, 12 inches long), moulding touch burners from the clay out of the riverbank behind the scout hut, taking dares to wade through the tunnel under Carrfield Rd, (watch out for the rats), damming the river up behind Rose Cottage in Cat Lane Woods. Life was never boring then, eh? Hope you are keeping well. Regards, Ed H.
  21. Hi Neil Memmott, Did you used to live on Upper Valley Road? and was there a Derek Memmott? My name is Ed Harvey, and I lived at 110 Rushdale Road, from 1942 to 1964, when we migrated to Melbourne Australia. I went to Carfield Primary, then to High Storrs Grammar. From U.V.Rd, I remember Ken Collis, Derek Billard, Raymond Steele, Brian Dale, Barry Ducker, Malcolm Wright. Malcolm was a close friend, and lived at 87 I think, next to Coopers on the corner. Have tried to locate Malcolm, but to no avail. Best wishes to you and yours. I hope you are keeping well. Kind Regards, Ed Harvey.
  22. Yes, we grew up together, were the same age, very good friends. I lived at 110 Rushdale Road, second house from the corner greengrocer. Also knocked around with Peter Robinson, Lol & Ron Richardson, Howard Blackwell, David & Graham Fairbanks, David Edwards, Ron Hill, Derek Blades, Derek Marsden, Graham Bowser, all from Rushdale Road. Mac Wright lived second house up from Kent Hill, on the left hand side, next door to Coopers. Also remember Steeles, Collis, Dales, Billards, Memmots, Duckers, Darlings & others from UV Road.
  23. Hi, I lived on Rushdale Road, from 1942 to 1964, when we emigrated to Australia. A good pal was Malcolm Wright, who lived at 87? Upper Valley Road, he had a younger sister, Hazel. Would love to hear from Mac, and anyone else who remembers me....Ed Harvey.
  24. My Grandparents lived on Erskine Rd, ( Harry & Maggie Coward ). My cousin, Harry Ward & Family lived next door. My cousin Barry McHugh & Family lived on Berners Close. This was through the 40s, 50s, & 60s. I spent a lot of my childhood & youth especially on the Black Banks, and around the Midhill Club, and Sat morning matinees at the Carlton Cinema. Also countless thousands of happy hours in Cat Lane Woods, where my best friend Phil Selkirk lived in Rose Cottage. My name is Ed Harvey, Carfield Primary, High Storrs Grammar, emigrated to Melbourne in 1964. To Alan52...Carn The Saints.
  25. The Headmaster at Primary, 47-53 was Mr. E.W.Chandler; A good man.
