  1. Sorry but I have no recollection of a Pete Rhodes as a PO Messenger about that time. I was a meesenger from !960 to 62.
  2. As a follow up to my previous notes regarding messengers. We had a meeting of PO veterans at the Bowshaw pub on the 10th December and we were joined by 2 ex messengers Alan Keen and ARO Jackson. It was great to see them after so many years. The lads have asked me to put out an appeal for any other ex meesengers who served as telegram boys between 1956 and 1964. In a previous message I listed all the guys I could remember but since then some more have been mentioned. Tony Jenkinson, PJ Cowlishaw (plum), Ossy Binnington? Please get in touch if any of you are out there still?
  3. Spoke to our Bryan and it would be great to see you 2 on the 10th December at 12.30pm at the Bowshaw. The xmas lunch is about £10. See you there. Rob

  7. Hi Alan, I remember seeing you on that occasion! I think it was at my daughter Victoria's house at Whiteways Road. Can't think when it was but I guess it must be at least 10 years ago? Some of the PO vets meet monthly every third tuesday at lunchtime at the Bowshaw Inn Dronfield. One of the attendees is an ex messenger with us Ian Barker. Good to hear from you....Rob
  8. What number did you live at Olivet Road? Are you a similar age to me?
  9. I was born in Olivet Road in 1943 and also went to both Woodseats Schools. The name Billam is known to me and my family. We lived at 45 Olivet the last house before the shop. We played in the "field" which was in between Olivet and Helmton and also played in the Woods which was also the path through to the top entrance of Graves Park at the top of Cobnar road! The other people i remember living in Olivet were the Pattersons, Lawsons, Beddalls, Roberts, Wilde, Hobson, Bradshaw,Lawsons, Twiby,

  11. Hi Bob, The Old Boys Association meet at Noon on the 2nd Wednesday in each month at the Leopold Hotel which of course was built on the original Central Technical School site. The Secretary of the OB can be contacted on 07884421081. I attended the CTS from 1956 to 59.
  12. Does anybody remember the Civic Restaurant at the bottom of West Street in the mid/late 50's. I think it was replaced by the Youth Employment offices at a later date.
  13. Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps together with Eddie Cochran at the Gaumont Barkers Pool early 60's. The Hollies at the City Hall in 64.
  14. My Mum used to come out with the following based on my first name:- If tha Bob dunt gee our Bob That bob he owes our Bob Our Bob ill gee your Bob a bob in eye!
  15. Just heard the very sad news of the deaths of 2 CTS teachers. In November Roger (Sally) Hughes died aged 87, followed a few weeks later by Ken Westnedge who was the grand age of 91.
  16. Not during the war but I certainly remember going to Battle of Britain celebrations in the early fifties. I understand its prime function during the war was as a barrage balloon site. It seems a dreadful waste that this land has remained empty ever since the RAF departed.
  17. There was a Jepson family who lived at the bottom of Chantrey Road in Woodseats during the times mentioned. They were a large family and I can remember going to school with Winnie Jepson. There house was at the bottom of the gennel that ran from Olivet Road.
  18. I dont have much sympathy for Bolt. He comes across as cocky and arrogant!
  19. Yes I do remember the other messengers you mention but you didn't give your name!!!
  20. I was a PO messenger from 1960 to 1962 riding the 125 bantams all day. We used to work sundays occasionally and had a special run to worksop. I remember a lot of the other messengers including:- Philip Parkin, Pete Cowlishaw,David Richmond,John Schofield,Roger Newsum,Robert Simpson,John Gillette,Alan Keen,Ian Barker,John Griffith,Tony Jukes,David Gambling,Graham Lomas,Stewart Curwen and Mick Flaherty. There were 2 blokes who supervised the messengers at that time...Brian Luscombe and Ray Rolley.
  21. I went to both the infants and junior schools from 1949 to 1954. Can still remember a lot of my classmates and teachers names.
  22. I left CTS in 1960 the year your father started. I was also in Engineering and Telford house. There was 4 houses at CTS .....Bessemer, Faraday, Stevenson and Telford. We had monthly house meetings and it was there that anyone who had been allocated de-merit marks during the month for behavior or performance problems was physically punished if they had 4 or more de-merit marks. Conversely if they had been given merit marks they were paraded as house heroes.Seems barbaric now but again I emphasise I don't think it did me any harm!
  23. Your reference to Pop Gregory reminds me of the day in the Chemistry Lab in Holly Street when Pop got fed up of the chatting that was going on in class. He went into his store room and brought forth a shotgun and told us all that if he could hit a clay pidgeon he could easily spot boys who were talking at the back. Can you imagine what would happen today if a teacher pulled such a stroke!!! His favourite means of punishment was the bunsen burner pipe and lots of us got a taste of that!
  24. Would you believe that the Williams shop at the bottom of Helmton Road is still there today!
  25. We used to make the same trip weekly to Lathkildale and I can well remember Jimmy Crawford and the Cadillacs. Always an interesting journey home pre breathalyser!!!
