Or why not a country where they spoke the language, where maybe there was a commumity from their country?
-
Yeah, but the locals have got the market sewn up. A French speaking refugee has bugger all chance of a cash in hand job in Geordie land.
-
Nope. https://www.refugee-action.org.uk/about/facts-about-refugees/ "Do people have to claim asylum in the first safe country they reach? No. The 1951 Refugee Convention does not require a person to claim asylum in the first safe country they reach. People trying to cross the Channel can legitimately claim asylum in the UK if they reach it."
-
Easy - if I could speak English I would rather claim asylum in an English speaking country - if I could speak French, German, Dutch, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese etc I'd rather claim asyum in a country speaking that language.
-
So the exception doesn't make the rule. Far easier if you already speak the lingo though.
-
Migrants - which are the vast majority of immigrants do. Asylum seekers have no choice. You do know the difference between migrants and asylum seekers?
-
Yup - Iive abroad. Many more folk can speak English rather than French. Perhaps why some people would want to claim aylum in the UK rather than France?
-
So - how do you work in the black economy when HMG can send you to any part of the UK where there might not be any jobs ? Cheapest places for HM to accomodate asylum seekers are in places with low demand for housing. ie places of high unemployent.
-
Really? Most people claiming asylum in France are, not surprisingly, from former African colonies where French is one of the natonal languages. Nearly one in 5 people can speak English. https://wordsrated.com/how-many-people-speak-english/#:~:text=As of 2023%2C an estimated,English than any other language.

What? Speaking English rather than French?
-
Well that kinda puts " they all come here for the benefits" question to bed doesn't it?
-
And what if you speak English rather than French? Did they have permission to come to France in the first place?
-
And where would an asylum seeker easily find it oustside London, given they have no say in where they are accommodated?

Being of a certain age and inclination - visit pubs eg; Red Deer and Bath Hotel. Closed Shop and Hallamshire House, -
Or not if you're sent to the sticks, (same link as above) "You cannot choose where you live. It’s unlikely you’ll get to live in London or south-east England."
