I put up with 10 years of beatings & would've gone to any man who was willing to take me away from it all. I spent 10 years in that relationship & 7 of those trying to escape it. I don't excuse myself but maybe ask for a little understanding! People always think it's easy to walk away from a relationship that isn't right, but those who've been there know it isn't so. One of the reasons for this is the loss of your own self esteem. Good friends of mine have been in a similar position...one did it twice on the trot!
