Sheffield City Council Cross-Party Statement Of Solidarity

Recommended Posts

Sheffield Town Hall

"Like many people across Sheffield, we have all been deeply troubled by what is happening in Gaza and our hearts are breaking for the people who are unable to flee to safety, say goodbye to their loved ones and face a future that they could never have imagined.

"We condemn the tragic loss of innocent civilian life over the last five months in Gaza and on 7th October in Israel. The ongoing bombardment and blockade of Gaza is devastating and heartbreaking to watch. Over 30,000 people have been killed and there is the prospect of widespread starvation. We express our solidarity and deep sympathy with all the victims, their families, the tens of thousands of injured people and everyone who has been displaced.

"We repeat our call for an immediate ceasefire. The killing must stop, hostages must be released and aid must be allowed to flow into Gaza. Israel must comply with the orders in the International Court of Justice’s interim ruling in full.

"We call on the UK government and the whole international community to do all they can to bring about an end to the violence and to restart the peace process.

"We are proud that Sheffield is a City of Sanctuary and that our city is home to many diverse communities and faiths. Our diversity is our strength. As political leaders, we commit to do all we can to bring our city together and we stand against all forms of hate, violence and racism, including Islamophobia and antisemitism."

- Cllr Tom Hunt, Leader of the Council and Leader of the Labour Group

- Cllr Shaffaq Mohammed, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group

- Cllr Douglas Johnson, Leader of the Green Group

- Cllr Dianne Hurst, Leader of the Sheffield Community Councillors Group

Why can't aid enter via Egypt?
Why aren't refugees being allowed to leave via Egypt?

No doubt the two sides have been waiting all along for Sheffield council to tell them what to do.

May I suggest they now do the same to Putin and Ukraine. With a bit of luck we'll have world peace by the weekend.

So basically they don't want them in Egypt either.

For very principled and sound reasons though - they don't want to facilitate ethnic cleansing. And let's not forget that there are plenty in Israel, including in the government, who have their eyes not just on the Palestinian territories but further afield.

I'm fairly sure the Egyptians were pretty clear that they don't want them, can't afford to look after them, and really shouldn't have to shoulder the burden of a problem that Israel is in control of.

Yet the rest of the world can't afford refugees/asylum seekers and expected to take them on anyway?

Well you could try to tell them they are signatories to the UN convention on Refugees, but when there's a couple of million of them looking to leave Gaza I don't think it'll change the Egyptians minds.

No mention of Hamas or the hostages in their statement either
