Active Travel: How Much Is Too Much?

Lets be honest whatever steps are made, it will always upset some people.

I guess when we made the switch from horses to cars, there were people who didn't like the idea of motorised transport, but the point is we have to make changes for the betterment of everyone.

And yes some people will be impacted, but we have to look at the bigger picture in the future

Anyway I am out of here

Isn't the place a bit hilly, and the roads a bit busy/crap, for cycling for your average middle-aged, lardy Sheffielder (disclaimer: other equally unfit body types are available)?  Free-wheeling down City Road and Granville, perhaps, at a push; peddling back up, not so much.

Great for students and other centre-dwellers zipping around the city centre between lectures or nipping to the local shops.  Bob and Janet from Manor Top off down town for a wander around the Peace Gardens though?  Can't see it.

No names, no pack drill, but there is definitely a self-entitled troll in this topic.

Oh come on — you’ve been asked to discuss the topic and not posters.

Saying ‘no names’ doesn’t wash either. It’s obvious who you meant.

If you disagree with a point, then state why. No need for getting wound up, namecalling (as you did earlier in the thread) and then bullying someone with an opposing view like this.

The wave is just childish too.

Thing is though, rogets is a little scamp who likes to cause trollish mischief on threads various and sundry and has done for a long time.  Essentially harmless, but a scamp nonetheless.  Shouldn't be surprising when someone states what it says on the tin.

Thank you very much, @Hecate. I suspect @SheffieldForumhasn't experienced his antics previously, so I will give him some slack.

They seemed to be engaging on the thread. You might not agree with their points but the discussion was there to be had.

Oh, they're certainly engaging, and that's the important thing.

Being daft myself, I like Rogets posts.

As you say, he's been around for a long time, lets not forget that Rogets fought in 2 World Wars for the freedom of speech..

Please respect these old soldiers...

Hmmm...

I don't think that's true at all, Mr Rolling.

The main aim of the forum is now obviously to get more people to post more posts, thereby increasing the perceived popularity of the forum (and potential advertising revenue) while at the same time trying to maintain an inclusive wokey image that everyone is equal.

Anyone who sits back and observes what is really happening on here will soon become aware of the fact that many forum posts are now not a true indication of reality...

But those tough choices should only be made by everyone else and not you?

How about if we ban older people, say those over 60 from driving. They can have a bus pass instead.

Tough choice and not everyone will be happy but right for the greater good as you put it.

Is that a joke?  Why pick on the very people who might need a car most?  Those that are more likely to have mobility issues and would find it difficult to carry heavy shopping on a bus!  Also never mind that ‘over 60’ isn’t retirement age for most and is rising.  And that’s just the first things that spring to mind.

What needs to happen is for people of all ages to be able to go about their everyday life as much as possible without having to drive.

@redruby, if you read what rogets said prior to your quoted post you would realise that you have jumped to the wrong assumption.

Bikes have gears you know.  Anyone with a moderate level of fitness can get around with little problem.

With an electric bike even the steepest hill is no problem.

It won't be for everyone, but many trips made in cars are very short and could easily be done on foot or by bike.
