Council Tax To Go Up 4.99%, Budget Balanced 'For Now'

Here's a thought, if we stopped housing the rest of the world's problem we'd probably be spending less and wouldn't need to hike taxes.

It's actually quite embarrassing and awkward that people like you genuinely think that the relatively modest levels of immigration in to this country (compared to our peers) is the real cause of our finances being in a mess and public services being dreadful.

The amount a city like Sheffield spends on newly arrived immigrants is a tiny fraction of the money spent on all other services for the vast majority of us who have lived here for a generation or more. Cuts to funding from central government and a lacklustre local and national economy are having a far, far greater impact on the money SCC have available to them.

So spending almost £9 million of taxpayer's money PER DAY doesn't impact what the government has to give to councils?

There's nothing MODEST about the levels of immigration, legal or otherwise. Net migration in 2019 was around 184,000. In 2022, just 3 years later that figure is 745,000. That's a 4 fold increase.

Since we're still short on doctors, nurses, engineers etc we can only surmise that the half a million extra immigrants don't possess these much needed skillsets

The embarassment is yours and your belief that three quarters of a million people entering the country with nothing and no skills isn't detriemental to the country

You're being conned.

The political equivalent of someone tapping you on your right shoulder then stealing money out of your wallet over your left shoulder while you look the other way.

You're the one being conned. Your blatantly appalling naivety shows believing the multicultral left lies.

People like you are the reason history will record that the West fell.

So, back to the topic 🙄 and the question earlier...

The government (Levelling up secretary Michael Gove) did indeed recently change the rules for councils like Birmingham and other section 114 areas to bypass the need for a referendum to raise over the 4.99% threshold (10% in the case of Birmingham).

My bold:  Do you have any reason whatsoever to believe that the government would give Sheffield more if they were spending less on immigrants ?

They don't strike me as being a very benevolent government at all.

Not much point complaining on the council tax thread about the completely different subject of immigration levels.    A letter to your MP may do more good.

Similarly regarding shortages of Doctors,  Nurses and Engineers  -  the council and our level of council tax are not responsible.

I expected the council tax to rise more or less by 5% and it has.     I don't suppose we can expect anything other than the same rise at every reset within the foreseeable future.

5% is also about what inflation is isn't it? Or not much higher.

Correct.

The population of the country (and our city) increases yet the number of people paying in to sustain the services remains static.

It's unsustainable yet never gets dared to be acknowledged.
