I am inclined to go along with the Ukdobby version of events, he fooled a lot of people, add to that they didnt seriously think they could unseat Clegg so didnt bother putting a decent candidate up.
 Share this content via...

Fair enough, but I was under the (obviously mistaken) impression that the idea is to present to the electorate a viable candidate, and with all due respect to O'Mara, he clearly didn't fit that criteria.
 Share this content via...

I suspect there was a little bit of "positive discrimination" involved too, bit like with the all woman lists. "Ooh he is disabled, that ticks a box".
 Share this content via...
RollingJ Â Â 2,048 #76 Posted February 1, 2023 He was still totally unsuitable - don't they do proper assessments, or is that asking too much these days?
 Share this content via...

Did you know that the CLP, in Sheffield Hallam's case, consisted of nearly 2,000 individual members at the time of Jared's election? How can a body of people that large be bent? How can a body of people that large be bent? OK - that I didn't know, but there will be a 'core' of active individuals, and it will be them who effectively make the decisions. They may not even be 'bent', but the selection of O'Mara as the candidate calls into question their competence/intent -IMHO, of course.
 Share this content via...

How can a body of people that large be bent? It was nothing to do with CLP. The chair of SH CLP confirms this in the link below. They were not told of Jareds nomination or that he himself had decided to stand nor were they informed of the process that was used to select him. https://labourlist.org/2019/08/what-labour-should-learn-from-jared-omaras-selection/  As it was a snap election the decision was made by the NEC entirely based on applications
 Share this content via...

Well yes, how can you expect local parties to organise hustings, a vote etc...at such short notice, the election was called 19th April for the 8th June, thats less than 7 weeks and you have to give the candidate enough time to campaign. Sorry, Sheffield Hallam CLP. 3 minutes ago, geared said:  So a small committee decided who got to stand?
