Grimesthorpe Part 3

Recommended Posts

Hello Brian. After what Terry has said I may be completely wrong about the bell tower being in Owler Brook School but sent the school an email on Friday. If I get a reply I will let you know.

The bottom of Wensley Street is opposite the Reform Chapel, the school is on the left as you go up the hill.

There is a bell tower at Owler Brook School but it's not the one from Owler Lane Secondary School. The link should take you to 'Anyone From Grimesthorpe' part 1.

Hi all,

The bell I saw was a feature on the grass outside the bottom side of the new Owler Lane schools a couple of years ago and which seems to have been removed as I mentioned in my post number 1115 of 11 May page 56 on this thread. I wondered if anyone knew where it now is.

This is the pic of the Earl Marshall Secondary, as it was previously called, which I took in 1999.

The bell tower can be seen atop the roof on the right between the trees and can be seen to be square shaped rather than round as is the one on the Owler Brook school pic which has been referred to.....

I, like brian1941, never heard the bell ring. I left the school in 1958.

Peter.

Thanks for your text Cat631, i have looked at Dommi pics from part 1

bell tower 2008, it doesn't look like the one in the picture Peter R

sent today. Would still be nice to know where it is.

I now know where that School is up Wensley St - thanks for that. Brian.

Hi Brian and all,

Originally from cat631s post, the Earl Marshall School bell tower is in situ top of the end of the roof between the trees on the right on my 1999 photo of the school.

See 4th pic down.

Also photo of the same bell tower on land at the new schools. I think it was off Rushby Street.

Please scroll to the bottom of the pics to find it.

Peter.

Forgive me if I have the wrong end of the stick, you are talking about the bell tower at Owler Lane School but showing pictures of Grimesthorpe School. I have tried to follow all the posts and quotes (and there's a lot dedicated to this subject) but am really confused. fleetwood

Hi fleetwood,

Sorry you are confused and hope this clarifies things.....

On my post of 11 May on this thread, number 1115 page 56, I asked if anyone knew the whereabouts of the bell tower which was originally on, what was in my time known as Earl Marshall Secondary School, but also known as one of the Owler Lane Schools. I had seen this bell tower a few years ago on display on the grass outside the new schools on the site but the last time I drove past it seemed to have been removed.

In later posts there was some confusion between the aforementioned bell tower and a bell tower at Owler Brook School on Wensley Street.

Regarding the pics, although the majority are of Grimesthorpe School, the first four are ones I took myself of Owler Lane schools from the Earl Marshall Road side in 1999 and the last one, not taken by me, is of the Owler Lane schools bell tower on display on the grass outside the Owler Lane side of the new schools. I was unable to separate the pics in the folder, hence the guidance given on my last post to find the pics in question.

Regards, Peter.

Thanks PeterR - For taking the time to clarify, still not totally clear but I believe it's my fault for not absorbing.

This is where Owler Lane School's bell tower used to live.

http://i1380.photobucket.com/albums/ah188/Subby631/Owlerlaneschool_zpsjrbodsam.jpg

It was rebuilt here but has apparently gone missing.

Could it be hiding in the bushes?

To clear up any more confusion, Owler Lane School became Earl Marshal School but is now called Fir Vale School.

Owler Brook School is in a different location and I haven't a clue why it's called that. Never having seen nor heard of an Owler Brook in Grimesthorpe.

Owler Brook primary school is located to west of Wensley Street and between the east end of Lloyd Street and above Dunmow Road.

Hi cat631,

Good pics of where the bell tower used to live. Not seen these before.

It may well have been hiding in the bushes when I drove past last time I was in the area. Watch this space :hihi:

Peter.
