Grimesthorpe Part 3

Hi Brian, thanks for the great pics again!

Regarding the old cars, the old pics were taken in 1965 and the middle car facing us is certainly a Morris Oxford or Cowley. Looks like an Austin Farina van near the motorbike, which is too small to make out. The one next to the school looks like a taxi.

Just past the car in the distance is The Wellington Inn on the corner of Clevedon Street. The school is just obscuring Clevedon Street junction.

Here, for convenience, is the pic you mention again and, also, the view in the opposite direction. On this one the Wellington is easily seen and the Victoria Hotel can just be seen beyond it protruding out behind the bus stop.....

Approx 45 or 46 or so the newsagent shop owner that was between the Vic and Wellington had a pre-war Chrysler Airfow. It had the small split rear window, four doors opening to the centre jamb and a bull nose front and naturally it was large, for a better idea if anybody interested you can Google it. Never did find out how he came to own such a car in that particular time period. fleetwood

Hi Brian,

It was Suter's shop. I did go in once or twice, but my mother would normally send me up to the next street, Carlisle Road, which she called the top street. It was round the corner where the Vic was.

I left Grimesthorpe in 1958 when I was 14. Not sure if it was still operating then.

Hi fleetwood,

I would be only 2 or 3 at the time you mention and don't recall the car. Would have loved to see it though. I think this is the model...

The car I used to wash on a Saturday morning in the early '50s for the Vic landlord was a Vauxhall 14. I doubt if anyone remembers it knocking about ??. It was like this and one can see the American influence eh?...

Thanks PeterR - Great pictures

Thanks stpetre and fleetwood.

There were very few cars around Grimesthorpe in the early '50s. The bottom side of the Vic was almost opposite our house as I lived at no 5 Adsetts Street near the junction with Grimesthorpe Road. The WMC and the police box could be seen from our doorstep, as could the school. I would look forward to seeing a car parked outside any of them.

Here's an Austin Sheerline like the one which belonged to the bookie, as my mother described him....

and a Wolseley like the one's at the police box...

Hi PeterR I got your PM I did see your post under Brians. I didn't know how to put the photo on, as you will see cat631 was good enough to do it for me,the numbers I gave you were correct but for some reason it would not open the photo. Here are some of the names on your photo that I know, Wendy Booker, Ann Briklebank, Pat Evans, Fay Sellers, & Olga of course. Mr Ruttle took some pupils on a day trip to Stratford- upon - Avon I can't remember the reason for the trip. I also remember Mr Turner and Mr Unwin

Sorry I don't know how to PM you back. The car your mum said belong to a bookie I think they called him Dick Mellon he was related to my late husband, uncle I think, Sheila rf2690 may be able to clarify. JeanJ

Does anyone know the year the photo was taken? I would think late 1950's. Good to see Bev Foster & Joe Cooper. Joe now lives at Wentworth. I lost touch with Bev a few years ago.

Hi Jean j, cat631 and Johnpm,

Thankyou for putting the school pic on ladies. I've located you bottom right Jean. Obviously mine was a different class and possibly a different year. I left xmas 1958. Unfortunately I don't recall anyone but it's possible some went to Grimesthorpe Junior and possibly Owler Lane Infants as I did. There were so many children, plus the odd memory box isn't the same now :)

I've mentioned a few on my photo on a previous post who you knew Jean and I met Pat Evans a few years ago. She was a care assistant at a home near Chesterfield.

I went on a day trip to Stratford on Avon too. Maybe it was the same trip. I recall that we stopped off near Edwinstowe to see the Major Oak in Sherwood forest. If the reason for the trip was explained to us it went over my head. Don't remember doing Shakespeare :) All I remember is enjoying seeing Robin Hood's tree and the river in Stratford.

Mr Turner (Pop) was my geography teacher.

Very interesting about the bookie.

Peter.
