Hiya Peter R, This subject has been on here but very long ago,

so i thought i'd put this on this thread.

I'am sure there are lots of people will remember this and where they

lived and where they were at the time of the fire.

At Height of the blaze many as 15 fire engines from around Sheffield

spent 5/6 hours tackling the outbreak at Firth Brown' Carlisle St.

Story was there was contractors in to do work on the first day of

the shut down week, the Steelmen were on a 2 weeks holiday.

Can anyone remember where they were at the time of the fire.

PS, It was in the 2/3 Machine shop - July 1969.Next

time i see you Bri i'll tell you the story.I was stood on the hill watching it.But i know now what happened cant put it on here though.Merry xmas love.x

Hi all, do you remember the above post on this thread from rf2690 originally posted by brian1941 in December 2016?

The pic on the post above is taken at the same location as a couple of pics of the fire on Ebay for sale here below. Worth a look. Scroll for a bigger pic and then move mouse over the pics for a still bigger pic.....

Thanks stpetre and fleetwood.

There were very few cars around Grimesthorpe in the early '50s. The bottom side of the Vic was almost opposite our house as I lived at no 5 Adsetts Street near the junction with Grimesthorpe Road. The WMC and the police box could be seen from our doorstep, as could the school. I would look forward to seeing a car parked outside any of them.

Here's an Austin Sheerline like the one which belonged to the bookie, as my mother described him....

and a Wolseley like the one's at the police box...

Think the Austin Sheerline could have belonged to my Dads uncle,he was a bookie.Perhaps JeanJ could shed some light on it.

Hi Peter and all, That was a good picture off ebay with fire

at Firth Browns on Carlisle St, you can just see the fireman on top

of ladder. I bet he soon shot in Alex pub for a pint once he finished

with that lot.

Upside of the Alex pub was just one house and my mate lived there

with his family, i use to call on friday nights as we both was in the

boys brigade and would walk on to the Reform Chaple. Brian.

Depending on the time of day, perhaps the 'Alex' was evacuated even if it was only them that lived there. Oh and those on Scott Street too.

Hi Brian and stpetre,

Glad you found the pics. interesting.

I transfered from the Lifeboys to the Boys Brigade on 28 Sept '56 Brian. Still have my certificates :) I left after only about six months. Would you have been there during that time, late '56 to early '57 ??

Also, just letting you know that the thread 'Anyone worked at Firth Browns?', which was closed, is now reinstated.

Hi Peter, Yes the pics were great, regards the Boy's Brigade i think

i started at the Reform Chaple 59/60ish.

Did you ever do first aid lessons and on friday night we did PE and

indoor sports, Charlie Wise was our captain. I had just one away holiday

to jersey with the staff and the lads. Very good that was.:thumbsup:
