I think it first entered the popular imagination during WW1 when hundreds of thousands died horrible deaths on it. In WW2 it was closely associated with the catastrophic evil of the concentration camps.

Now, many people associate it with the difficulties of mass migration and with the powerful subjugating the weak.

Even in the simplest analysis it's a tool for exclusion and division.

 

No, I don't think it's beautiful and when Trump says that it is, what he's really praising is the power it represents; rich over poor, white over brown and black; us over them.

 

He's celebrating evil.
