Motorcycle Service in Sheffield?

Recommended Posts

Hi all

I've just recently bought a 1992 GS500E, it has about 50,000km on the clocks and I'm looking for a good place to get it serviced.

I've contacted Manhattan Motorcycles who are the closest distance to me and they've said it's going to cost arround £160, I've never had a motorcycle serviced before so I'm not too sure what prices generally are. Is this about the going rate for a service?

Can anybody reccomend any other decent garages?

Thanks in advance!

I would say that's about right, however I have just serviced my recently purchased 2006 ZZR 600 myself

That's front and rear brake pads, oil, oil filter, air filter and spark plugs.

All the info you need is out there on the internet.

Being a motorcyclist myself since the age of 16(60years),I can honestly say I have never known a biker who did not do his own maintenance. To do the job yourself would cost under 50 quid. It's quite easy and you will know it has actually been done.If you are not sure ask a few bikers, read a book, look it up on line or enrol on a course, don't pay dealers these rip off prices.

Some motorbikes require specialist tools and diagnostics which is probably out of the range of DIYers. Some bikes need the engine removed from the frame for a service. I certainly wouldn't have contemplated servicing my last bike myself.

I'd be more than happy to tinker with an older bike (I've had many), but you need to draw the line somewhere. I don't consider the price quoted by Manhattan to the OP to be a 'rip off' as you claim either. So far as I understand, they have a very good reputation.

Give Stuart at Bill Beevers a call. He will pick the bike up if you can't get it to him. He's on Deep Lane S5 (Woolley Wood Bottom) and his no. is 07740 410717.

You've purchased a vehicle that is 25 years old and likely to have all manner of worn parts and minor issues with it. A good mechanic will want to offer a level of care that goes beyond the checklist for a service. Manhattan have a good reputation. I'd suggest you have them look after your bike whilst you learn more about it, then you can make the decisions yourself.

Thanks for the replies!

I've previously owned two 125cc motorcycles in the past which I did the odd bits and pieces on. I didn't do many miles or own them for very long so I only needed to do oil changes and spark plugs etc every so often as per the manuals.

I feel as though I want to take this bike to someone who knows what they're doing as I frequently travel home on the GS from Uni which is 100 mile round trip.

If £160 is about the going price then I'll probabaly take it to Manhattan's!

Thumbs up for Paul at Manhattans.

With your 1992 bike explain you'd like to see it serviced and 'learn' as much as you can. They should accomadate that request.

I service my bike [ 16 years old] and it is quite straight forward to do all servicing bar removing the front forks or dropping the rear tyre. However, there are guys who do all that and the rest!

You can save a lot of money but need to be certain you know what you are doing.

There will be websites that have members clubs that share expertise and post helpful answers to any query you may have.

Do a search for 1992 GS500E: I have and it's all there for you - even YouTube!

You can learn everything from your armchair.
