It is the inevitable consequence of sending out the word that if you can reach Europe you'll be allowed to stay. European politicians have effectively invited migrants to risk death to ease their own conscience and maintain their own power. They will blame the people traffickers but it is their doing.

The rise of the nationalist and far right parties will also be their fault. The end of a tolerant Europe will be their fault. The racism and violence against migrants will be their fault.

We need a strategy that will deliver the best outcome in this world. There is no point pretending the response of people to the arrival of millions of migrants will be different. The signs are there and mustn't be ignored. Look at polls that gauge public opinion and what is the direction of opinion? Look at how nationalist and far right parties are fairing... what's the direction of travel? What is the number 1 issue in the Uk? How are Muslims currently perceived in Europe and are we seeing greater unity and trust or the opposite? How will creaking services, hit by recession, cope with a further increase in users without more money, how will people react to their quality of life deteriorating further and who'll be blamed?

We ignore the reality at our peril. We can't fix the world. We must say no to migrants and stop the exodus.

I like how people take the hard line and then as soon as they see with own eyes , a kid washed up on a beach, it's a problem all of a sudden....

Been saying since day one we should get them in, process them. ...This image hasn't changed my mind.

You can't stop these migrants....its only going to increase so what you going to do? Build more fences?

All this political posturing is hollow and futile. The question is how to integrate the masses that are coming on a daily basis.

We have to accept the UK is going to change dramatically in the next few years....

And we should call them what they are, refugees, not migrants.

Migrants, refugees....?

Germany grant visa multiple times what the UK do. Surely we need to look at that and decide if we are doing enough.

The other issue is the traffickers, the criminals who are profiteering from the deaths....no easy solution.

If we had been taking in all the migrants that wanted to come to this country since, say, the beginning of the year, how would that have stopped this poor 3 yr old drowning in the med?

They're not all refugees though, which is why even the BBC uses 'migrants' as a blanket term.

It's a really, really difficult situation at the moment, not at all helped by Germany's very confusing rhetoric.

Merkel has caused a lot of the problems we are seeing recently whilst attempting to actually solve them. Germany have stated that they will allow any Syrian refugees to enter the country that can get to the border whilst also telling other European countries to keep applying the Dublin Regulation which states that Refugees must be registered in the first country they arrive in. This has caused chaos as thousands of migrants line up at train stations in Hungary on their way to Germany and are angered by the fact that the Hungarians are applying European law in attempting to register them.

There needs to be cohesion in Europe and laws need to be either changed to stuck to by every country as it's just a confusing mess.

It hits home when photo's like this are shown, however the answer is not to just let imigrants/refugees into the country and swamp our services and create more tension on top of what is already there. Who is going to pay for it all, all the food, clothing, language classes, schooling, medical care etc, etc...

The root cause needs to be fixed here, and that's where I don't mind seeing my money going. The majority seem to be coming from Syria so quite clearly that country has some massive issues, now I don't pretend to know a great deal about the whole situation but surely when a country is in such dire straits then it needs a proper fix.

The EU/UN should put together a massive task force, take over the country and run it in a way that works and lets the migrants stay and prosper. There has to be a point where we say enough is enough and get firmly stuck in for the good of humanity...

Europe could organise boats. 500 people per day. Off the coast of libya. Stop some of the criminals.

500 people died when a boat capsized the other day...these would be 'safe boats'. Run by the military.

At calais, we could setup checkpoints where 100 are processed per day.

if we cant control, least we can contain.

It probably wouldn't have done. We do need to do more to help genuine refugees but we need to do something to stop people becoming refugees in first place.
