Ending world poverty

Recommended Posts

So its not the employers fault that people are poor, who's fault is it then?

And the best way to decrease the gap is to keep everyone poor, since it is impossible for everyone to be rich.

Who's fault is it? Who allows these employers to exploit their workers? The Chinese government? The companies (such as Apple) that knowingly move production to these sweatshops?

It's not impossible for everyone to be comfortable, self sufficient, housed, healthy, educated......it's not impossible for everyone to have an equal chance at life from the moment they're born.

No one's.

The workers.

Its not impossible for everyone to be equal and poor but it is impossible for everyone to be equal and wealthy. We can have a world full of people that are equal but poor by our living standards, or we can have variety with some rich people and some poor people.

Again, define poor......

If by poor, you mean basic living conditions, the ability to produce and/or buy food, access to good free education, clean drinking water in your home, health care and a suitable transport system, then yes, everyone can and should have these basic amenities.

Some will still be rich and some will be poor, but everybody will have the basics and everyone will have a chance to become wealthy.

This is possible.

Imagine the poorest person in Britain having to give up half everything they consume (Energy, food, water, raw materials) and you might be getting close to living standards of everyone if the wealth of the world was equaled out.

Everyone already has chance to become wealthy, but everyone can't be wealthy. And by wealthy I mean the average British person is wealthy.

Wealth wouldn't need to be equaled out. It would just need to be distributed more fairly.

It wouldn't be fair for one person to have more than another person so it would need to be equaled out.

First of all, at the moment, not everyone can become wealthy. Not everyone has the chance.

Secondly, we don't need wealth to be equaled out, to start with we should be aiming for basic human rights for all, like shelter, food and clean water.

Next comes education and healthcare, good transport systems and communications.

All these need major infrastructure investment and spending.

The world has enough money for this if we plan it right (joined up thinking,) and use some of the money from the super rich who really won't miss it, and don't demand an arm and a leg in return, but do it for the benefit of humanity.

Once these are in place, then you might arguably say that everyone has a chance to become wealthy, and then responsible capitalism can flourish.

So you want a global tax system that will take huge amounts of money from the wealthy and an uncoruptable global government to spend it in countries that need infrastructure, we will obviously have to send troops into these countries to protect these projects or the money and materials will simply be siphoned off by the current corrupt governments. Its very likley that the wealthy will resist this and will have to cut their investments in Western companies which will result in higher unemployment here and an increase in poverty.

Also remember that if all the Global wealth which currently stands at $241 trillion is divided equally everyone will have £21000, or £31672 per adult, which isn't enough for an house in the UK.

Why do you keep harping on about dividing the money equally?

That's not what this thread is about. I don't think anyone except you has ever mentioned dividing it equally. It will never happen.

As for the wealthy resisting, we have to appeal to their better nature. They also have enormous vanity. What better way to secure your place in history?

There are a good many philanthropists throughout the world, but their gernerosity needs co-ordinating and direction. Some of it will have to be through taxation, but if everyone including the rich just paid the proper 30% without recourse to tax fiddles and dodges, there would be enough.
