Can you Identify this movie?

Hi all,

 

This film I would love to find out what it's called.

 

Was on Tv circa early 80's.

 

The plot is kinda obscure. However this is how it started:-

 

A young boy was in his bedroom, he woke to find a present in his room. It was a Doorway/portal/gate into a fantasy world (the box was wrapped in a red and white stripped wrapping (like that of a barbers twirly thing).

 

When the boy went through this doorway/portal the whole film turned into animation and was until he returned at the end.

 

It all sounds a bit Jamie and the Magic torch, but it was definatley a film (can't remember what happened in the animation). American too from what i remember. Sure it was shown on ITV (adverts) and I think before C4 existed.

 

Not much to go on, but if you've seen it, you'll know what i'm talking about.
