Is Sheffield Council about to sell off bits of Graves Park YET AGAIN?

Recommended Posts

What relevant authority, do you mean the heritage commision or whatever it's called. I find quite a lot of the supposed info both on this forum or the Star to be wrong, inaccurate, biased or just plain stupid. Please if some-one is going to respond to something I've said be slightly more ambitious with the response and put a bit of detail in.

It seems the council is pressing ahead with plans to sell off a cottage that belongs to the Graves Park Charity, despite covenants they accepted that preclude such action.

Cobnar Cottage is part of the gift of land given to the people of Sheffield by JG Graves. The council agreed when accepting the gift that all the land would be maintained as parkland. Any buildings on the land that were not required would be knocked down and the land restored to parkland.

So it seems odd that the council is pressing ahead with plans to sell the cottage which isn't theirs to sell. The Charity Commission has been informed about the breach of trust. The council too have been informed just in case they later try to claim they were unaware.

Oh dear oh dear. Haven't we been here several times before?

The Charity Commission have ruled on this matter many times. Each time it costs the council a load of cash. But it doesn't stop them trying it. Most folk are bright enough to learn that if you stick your hand in a fire it burns. It is only the really stupid ones that keep on doing it time and time again.

So here they go again. Why do the Council spend so much time and money trying to sell off bits of the park? So they can break the covenants, thereby setting a precedent and giving them carte blanche to sell off as much of it as they like.

If they get away with this, what's next? A block of flats where the sports pavilion is now? A nice housing estate stretching from Norton Lane to Charles Ashmore Road?

It's only a matter of time folks.

So what hope is there for the rest of the parks in Sheffield with Landgrab being the policy of the council?

Why are they persisting with this? Do they remember that Graves Park cost the local Labour Council their power of the Council to the Lib Dems last time, as so many people were disgusted with their plans to 'gift' parts of Graves Park before? It seems they are prepared to pay the ultimate price again, but I just cannot understand why? Do they still not realise the strength of feeling there is in protecting our local parks, even after they were booted out of power last time? It just seems crazy.
