Plain Talker   11 #1261 Posted January 20, 2014 A little off topic, but I'm trying to remember. At the bakery shop, a cheap snack for us always hungry kids was, a tea cake, a breadcake, a pikelet, or one other - a little bit smaller and thicker than a pikelet.  What was it?  An oatcake, perhaps?  ---------- Post added 20-01-2014 at 14:25 ----------  as you know i talk a lot of chickling and bag as well:gag:  Tt's Chitterling and bag, kidley. something I think looks totally unappetising, but my father loves it. willybite   10 #1264 Posted January 21, 2014 (edited) A little off topic, but I'm trying to remember. At the bakery shop, a cheap snack for us always hungry kids was, a tea cake, a breadcake, a pikelet, or one other - a little bit smaller and thicker than a pikelet.  What was it? a fatcake was what it was,or an oat cake. I remember my old nan when she had finished preparing her meat and potato pie the left over mix for the crust would be baked on its own along with the pie. this we knew as a fatcake. trastrick   866 #1267 Posted January 22, 2014 A pikelet is a larger flat oatcake (pancake size) A crumpet is the fat small one,.  That would be it but there was another more common name for them in the old days.  We never called them oat cakes or crumpets, sounded too posh
 Share this content via...
pattymumek   10 #1268 Posted January 22, 2014 We said oatcakes but didn't say crumpet - definitely too posh . I think we must have called crumpets pikelets - I'd forgotten that ;-) and oatcakes were oatcakes.
 Share this content via...
