megalithic
I'm experimenting, as i have been for 3 years or so now, mainly knapping glass as we have no source of flint. Would be good to meet liked minded people in Sheff.
Cavegirl
I've had a go at flint knapping on a few occasions and can manage the odd good flake, but I do have a friend who's pretty keen on it and has all the tools that I can put you in touch with. Have you managed the Levallois technique yet? How did you get on at Avebury?- go on please make me incredibly jealous hehe
megalithic
I've made a few points, disc knives etc, but i only have makeshift tools, they do a job though. Sourcing material is a real pain though, at the moment i'm stuck with knapping glass, as you'll know, no flint locally, i'm even having trouble finding chert. ! Avebury, it just gets better every year, did some of the more obscure sites this time, especially the round barrows, though i also did the obvious again, Avebury itself, Silbury, Silbaby, West Kennet and East Kennet long barrows, the polisher, Swallowhead, further out Stonehenge, Durrington and Woodhenge, the Cockoo stone, the site of "Bluestone" henge and the terminus of the Stonehenge avenue, Adams grave, shall i go on. ? Get yerself on Facebook, i've upped hundreds of pics. Edited June 27, 2011 by tro11
Tony Erikson
This sounds really interesting but I haven't got the foggiest idea what you're on about. Is flint knapping making tools from flint?

PalaeoBob
Hi I am a knapper in Sussex who teaches at Sussex Uni and works in Archaeology with especial interest in the palaeolithic If you pay the postage I will send you all the flint you could ever want Alternatively you could try the old victorian square kitchen sinks or scrap insulators from pylons, plate glass, bottle bottoms or anything that takes a conchoidal fracture I get chalcedony from my local tropical fish centre (pretty rocks for fish tanks) and white quartz from my local garden centre PalaeoBob
Norbert
My dad used to do some knapping at Flamborough Head as there's lots of flint lying around. He wasn't very good, if we'd been living in the stone age we'd have starved to death.
