The IKEA in Sheffield thread

Recommended Posts

Considering they had to build a new motorway junction at Warrington when that IKEA opened, and various large scale projects have been turned down by local councils because of pressure on existing roads (Salford racecourse being a recent one) there is no way it will go wherever there's something currently nearby.

I am informed that IKEA would talk money, if a new junction is required.

When the Warrington one opened it was the only store there and the traffic used to back up to the dual carriageway 2-3 miles away and sometimes back to the motorway junction another 2 miles away.

Then the retail park expanded with a huge M & S, Toys R Us and Next etc...

It wasn't until all these were built that the new junction came along.

I've heard from someone who works for them that the new site was going to be in Donny but the council turned it down, it is now going to Sheffield, somewhere off the Parkway
There is an IKEA site in Doncaster (you can see it just off the M18 ), but it's warehousing/distribution only.

There must have been some heavy (negative/protectionist) influence by Doncaster retailers at the planning stage, as IKEA usually slot a retail store in their distrib platforms as well.

Spot on. The traffic blocked all the roads right to the A49. The motorway and upgrading of surrounding roads did a lot to relieve the congestion, but

Warrington was lucky because that part of town was quite open and already under a development plan.
