Waverley Development at Catcliffe MEAGATHREAD

Recommended Posts

I'd be more worried about what they're built on.

Looked like just a load of mining spoil to me

I used to work on the development team for Harworth Estates at the waverley development but I am retired now so am impartial. The site was cleaned up and all the contamination sealed inside the big hill next to the railway line. After the clean up a specialist company was brought in to test the site by boreholes and surface sampling and they certified to the council that the site was clean. Actually some contamination was found near the river and quite a big operation was mounted to remove it and then that bit was retested. This testing was all about 4 years ago.

I worked on the clean up of the old Orgreave site. There was a very thorough decontamination that took years and all the contaminated soil and rubble was sealed in a land fil on site which is now the big hill next to the railway by Handsworth. The whole site was reengineered to produce ground conditions capable of supporting building up to four storeys. The work was carred out by UK Coal but an independent national company was brought in to test the whole site for contamination and for stability and they gave the site a clean bill of health. I know they were employed by UK Coal, but as professionals they were bound to be impartial and all data was submitted to fully independent auditors, including the council.

Considering these and wondered if anyone knows the schools kids go to from here.

Thanks

thats the one thing i dont know of, lots and lots of houses going up, and i dont think the plans included any additional primary or secondary schools at all. i assume they have worked out that the local schools (athelstan, handsworth grange etc will accomodate.) it may also include some nearer to treeton, brinsworth catcliffe etc)

The original outline planning application for the waverley development included two schools.

I beleive that a school is included in the plans. If not then you have 3 in Brinsworth, all of which are fairly full at the moment (as an exgovernor of one) and there are ones in Handsworth but im not sure if it is going to be classed as Rotherham or Sheffield.

Points to consider if you are thinking of buying.

1. Access - The councils will not allow an access road to be built so you are ferrying a lot of people into the "morrisons" roundabout or off handsworth turnoff on the the parkway

2. Public transport if you have no cars. Its a limited service up there, the BRT scheme is not going to happen up there so it will be commercial services only

3. Schools - see above.

4. HS2 - It could be VERY near you so your views will be disturbed and noise increased.

5. I've not seen a layout but if it is anything like Woodlaithes village then all the houses are on top of each other with very little personal space.

6. Its rotherham, that should be enough to put anyone off :)

is that still on the cards though?

Good question. The original planning application (which included the schools) by UK Coal was for the whole site, but then individual developers buy parcels of land and apply for their own planning permissions so I am not certain how the original conditions are enforced. Also, since then HS2 has smashed through the whole plan and probably changed everything. Shame really, I thought it was quite a good plan, to be spoiled by a pointless high speed rail link that will take half an hour of the Manchester/London commute and cost £60 billion (twice the estimate).

even if schools arent included it will still attract people as it will be handy for commuting to town or motorway, into sheff or rotherham and will be new housing after all. i can see them all selling, its already busy with people there in the houses already finished. wouldnt want to live there myself until the site was much further down the completed route tho as it will always look like a building site for yrs, but prices are lower at first for quick buyers.

Our problem is we believe it will come under Rotherham Council when my lad is fancying Handsworth School.

I might go along tomorrow and ask them in the sales office.
