sooz22   10 #109 Posted December 30, 2007 I have been in this position before, its alright knowing you rights but what can you do when the vet flatly refuses to give a prescription even after I had paid over one hundred pound for treatment. They know that in most cases its a insurance claim and milk the situation., if I hadn’t been claiming it back I would have taken it further.  Trading standards or the RCVS usually gently persuades them otherwise  Its only been law since 2005: http://www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si2005/20052751.htm
 Share this content via...

Rainrescue   10 #111 Posted December 30, 2007 crikey that was quick  how did you find them out?  any way that we can list the other vets in sheffield, wonder if someone could phone them and see if they do do out of hours, and how much they charge?  btw, the one we took the emergency rescue ones to was in newark - not sheffield. thats where the dogs were - and so its a country wide problem. holidayhutch   10 #112 Posted December 30, 2007 If you go onto the Vets Now website you can look at a directory of all the Members for a particular area that use them for out of hours services:)
 Share this content via...
Rainrescue   10 #113 Posted December 30, 2007 OK So maybe we should start a new thread asking people to list vets in south yorkshire?  Highlight those that are on the vets now list as V/N, and then work through phoning each of the vets once the list is complete - Do a price comparison for say   annual vaccination price cat annual vaccination price dog in-hours consultation fee out of hours consultation fee  I bet the results would be interesting
 Share this content via...
mojo1   10 #114 Posted December 30, 2007 My vet, Crookes Rotherham use Vets Now and I am certainly not happy about it. I did think of changing to Maltby vets but paid them a visit and was not impressed by their diagnosis at my consultaion and the prices were a lot more than Crookes too. So I am stuck with the devil I know. There are a few other vets local to me which dont use vets now:  Hall Court at Dinnington Wildbore at Worksop.  However I wouldnt touch either of these with a bargpole.  I am happy to sign to petition Crookes if anyone is interested.  Hall Court have been our family Vet for a good twenty years and have been incredible to say the least. They also run an account system so you can pay in monthly and your pet is covered when it's needed.  They got our old dog through a full hysterectomy at the age of 17 which was pretty miraculous considering how ill she was before she went in. She lived for another 2 years and without them I doubt she would have made it through the week.  Anyway back to the subject in question. Strix   11 #116 Posted December 31, 2007 I have a bigger issue with the standard of care at Vets Now than I do their pricing  I took Brude there with a full bladder when he was paralysed with his spinal injury. The poor dog was clawing at me in frustration, crying and panting. He'd not had a wee in over 12 hours. I knew they could empty his bladder manually, but the woman refused to do it, gave him a morphine injection, and gave him a look that told me she believed he'd be dead soon!  this was at 8pm friday night. on saturday morning at 9am we were referred to the spinal specialist who operated on him at 11am - and he's showring fit now  I think I'll be taking Sooz's advice
 Share this content via...

Even when you have pet insurance, most STILL expect you to fork out the fulll amount and THEN you have to wait ages to get it back from the insurers- and I'm sorry, I just dont have a spare grand that I could pay out and wait 3-4 weeks to get back. A distant relation's dog ran into the road last week- £1000 for a broken leg - I dont think he's insured. I'm with Petplan and Park vets and they're both great BUT I dread ever having to make a huge claim- it's been bad enough when I've had to find £300 at a time - and it's all the more annoying when someone else is responsible for my dog needing vet treatment (like when she was attacked late last year by 2 dogs that the owner didnt give a toss about).  and after paying out for cat insurance for years for several cats at atime and seeing no benefit whatsoever, only rising premiums, Ive opted out of cat insurance altogether - I'm now setting up a slush fund with the money I used to spend on insurance- of course, it'll be a while before there's enough to be of any benefit, but I am sick of giving mon ey away to con-surers
 Share this content via...
Gwyneth   10 #119 Posted March 9, 2008 As far as I know, our vets, (Vets4Pets Millhouses) use the VetsNow service, it's the only thing I'd grumble about them! But I refuse to change vets as its taken us so long to find such a good one! Yet another good mention for Scott and Caroline (I wonder if they are on here?) DIODE Â Â 10 #120 Posted May 29, 2010 "CROOK,S VET,S ROTHERHAM. we were told by "crooks", that the vet would phone before calling to our home to put our dog to sleep. he arrived without phoning us. i asked him to sedate our dog before putting him to sleep. the vet had not brought any sedation medication with him. he convinced me to try without sedation,my poor dog screamed. the vet had to leave and come back 30 minutes later. when he put our dog to sleep, our poor dog groaned very load for 10 to 15 seconds and his lungs were working as well. we thought our dog would have the needle and collapse. we have spoke to people who had their dog put down, and all say the dog falls peacefully to sleep. we believe our dog suffered in last few moments of its life. the vet botched the procedure from start to finish. we would not recommend this firm to anyone. we are left with the memory of failing our good friend, "jerry-lee"
 Share this content via...
