  1. Incorrect. Good Friday is not a Bank Holiday, and never has been. The confusion is yours, not the council's. Bank Holidays are set by statute, see the Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971, schedule 1: http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1971/80/schedule/1 In England and Wales, Good Friday is known as a traditional or "common law holiday". It is a Bank Holiday in Scotland (and listed as such in the above act).
  2. You think it's not already been tested?
  3. There's a story here where a brain tumour turned a petty thief into an armed robber: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/law-and-order/9877849/Brain-tumour-turned-petty-thief-in-to-violent-armed-robber.html Brain tumours can do pretty dramatic things to people's personalities. Read this: http://www.legalaffairs.org/issues/January-February-2006/feature_thompson_janfeb06.msp There have been lots of other examples. Brain tumours apart, it's perfectly believable that mental illnesses can turn people into criminals when they wouldn't otherwise behave like that.
  4. Rather than this punch and judy stuff, it might help to go back to the report, which is all we've got to go on. First of all, the accused had already been in prison since August last year. he's now got 2 years community service, a condition relating to where she lives, and has been ordered to undergo 2 years supervision and mental health treatment. If you look at sentencing guidelines, they will take into account mental illness as a mitigating factor, but also the fact that she admitted the offences (one attempted robbery and 2 thefts). Take a look: https://www.sentencingcouncil.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/web_robbery-guidelines.pdf https://www.sentencingcouncil.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/Analysis-and-research-bulletin-robbery.pdf
  5. I'm not seeing anything new in the planning applications database. There have been various proposals. Plans for a nursing home were granted conditionally in 2003, but obvious came to nothing. Plans to demolish it and build flats were withdrawn. Plans to erect a "health assessment and treatment unit" were refused. There's also something about "Structural work and refurbishment of fire damaged building, including new windows", which is dated 2012. Could that have taken 3 years?
  6. Some activities listed here: https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/out--about/leisure/activities/children-young-people.html
  7. I'm not clear, were you still there 10 minutes after entry or not? on edit: on, I see you admit: Open and shut case! How long were the other cars there for? Do you have photographic evidence of that? The company obviously have someone there to write tickets - are they noting times of arrival?
  8. http://hillsborough.independent.gov.uk/repository/report/HIP_report.pdf ---------- Post added 02-04-2015 at 08:33 ---------- That's a strange way to describe that tragedy. What actually happened is that a supposedly neutral zone on the terraces was filled mainly with expatriate Juventus fans. With the two groups closer than planned, confrontation and missile throwing built up leading to the disaster. Ticketlessness per se was not the real point.
  9. In any case "signing the official secrets act" is symbolic (or maybe it's done as a reminder), since like any law it applies whether you have signed it or not. ---------- Post added 02-04-2015 at 07:53 ---------- If a council employee reveals personal information in a public forum, that could be a disciplinary offence. If that's what happened.
  10. No, I mean, it's full of grass and bushes and trees and things people drop and insects and worms and all kinds of stuff and rats aren't fussy. It's not a desert, is my point.
  11. Pedantry. Why concentrate on that bit, rather than on the much more significant point that Duckenfield lied about the behaviour of the Liverpool fans. It's not a crime to be late to a football match. The responsibility here lies with the people whose job was to manage the crowds.
  12. It's a cemetery. Full of food for rats.
  13. The University hasn't bought it. They've leased it. It's not going to be apartments, it's going to be used for teaching. The owners may resume development of the lower part of the site, and that might be flats.
  14. According to the map on the Streets Ahead project site, they're not due to commence full resurfacing work on Penistone Road until August this year. So whatever they've done for now probably is intended to be a temporary fix pending that.
  15. I think this is a different plan to whatever we've heard about before.
  16. Google maps is your friend: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/dir/
  17. No, G1 London Property own it, apparently. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-south-yorkshire-30716626 ---------- Post added 30-03-2015 at 17:48 ---------- Well, the owners are.
  18. Hallam are going to rent it now: http://www.thestar.co.uk/news/business/business-news/hallam-uni-to-rent-central-post-office-1-7182724
  19. Sounds about right. I've just counted 8396 car parking bays, using the councils city centre car park map. I had a look at the on-street bays map, but it'll take too long to count them in the time I currently have.
  20. "Of course"? See: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/9155/guidance-unpaid-parking-charges.pdf Chapter 7: How is a parking contract formed? The point is that compensation for breach of contract, when a contract is established, have to be related to a realistic estimate of loss. Parking companies have often not been making a realistic estimate of loss. But you can end up losing a court cases and paying for breach of contract nonetheless. See the FAQs at the end of the linked document above.
  21. Indeed. On the other hand, we will be the first country in the world to introduce this vaccine.
  22. A deal on the Meningitis B vaccine has been agreed, apparently: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-32101921
