  1. Even if it doesn't I think you'd find there wouldn't be a problem encouraging people to move here. Sheffield has a lot going for it. I've a few friends down South who'd love to move oop North, there just aren't the techie jobs here for them. Chicken and egg situation I suppose. My own (uni contract research) job just finished a couple of weeks ago, and I'm struggling to find something suitable local, but I'd rather stack shelves in Morrisons than move back down South.
  2. There used to be something just like that called British Technology Group (BTG) which owned/had first dibs on patents produced by all UK Universities (some arrangement like that anyway) and had the job of commercialising them. I think the last Tory Government privatised it and it faded away...
  3. Definitely have to agree there on keeping the researchers and commercialisers at arms length. I spent four years working for a University spinoff company down south which was run by the researcher who (allegedly) invented the stuff we were commercialising... I say he ran it, he ran it into the ground because he just wasn't the right person to run a company.
  4. Somebody already said Enigma.... Principles of Lust by them does it for me!
  5. If I'd seen this sooner I'd have been tempted, but wouldn't really have time to raise the necc. sponsorship. I've done this before about six years ago, and I'd really reccomend it too - no burned feet, singed toes or the like so don't worry. It was worth it just for the psych-you-up session before the firawalking.
  6. Yeah, got some of their frozen stuff the other day (same as Fulton's I think). It's ok, just I was hoping to find somewhere selling it fresh.
  7. Might give that recipe a try... used to make my own haggis as well, got the ingredients from a local abbertoir for a quid :-)
  8. Was up in Scotland a couple of weeks ago, and had forgotten how much I missed this stuff - perfect in a roll for brekkie. I know Morrisons used sell the fresh ones along with their burgers and bangers, but not any more by the looks of it (other than the frozen variety, which ain't as good). Anybody know any butchers or supermarkets where I might be able to get some? Cheers.
  9. I moved here from Bath and the recycling there was great (the only good thing about the council there really). I can't see why they don't do it here. They'd take practically anything in the recycling box: cans, bottles, paper, old car batteries, printer toner cartridges, old engine oil, clothes, ...
  10. I don't think it's no smoking any more, is it? Well, there were people smoking inside last time I was there... maybe a month or so ago? Never tried the food, but the beer certainly sucks... just the usual suspects, nothing much interesting.
  11. Hey, I've lost half a stone since xmas! But unfortunately, yes, these things definitely have to be treats. Dammit, why can't lettuce taste as good???
  12. mmmmm.... deepfried mars bars :-) yes, they can be a bit sickly and a king size mars bar is just too much - I always thought a Bounty would be a better choice for deep frying. And yes, we also fry fruit pudding in Scotland and have it for breakfast along with our tattie scones and square sausage... makes me homesick just thinking about it. But for the real deep fried afficionados the best thing is a deep fried pizza from a Scottish chippy, preferably an East coast one with "sauce" on it - a mixture of brown sauce, vinegar and water or something like that - you really can't beat it!
  13. Hear hear from the South of Edinburgh accent! (I'm from Loanhead originally) I've heard some really strong Black Country accents that were difficult to follow, more so than Brum, and some Northern Irish can be tricky. Not had too many problems with Yorkshire, Scouse or Geordie. Glaswegians, maybe...?
  14. I'e been to the Polish restaurant in Oxford and the food was really good, though I can't remember what I had - probably because the vodka was also very good, especially the one that tasted like I was drinking a christmas cake :-) I'll definitely give this one a try now I know it's there.
  15. Lots to choose from then (but no rush, I'm definitely a fair weather biker and I'm happy with it sitting in the garage when I look out the window at days like today ;-) Got me a nice ZZR600 which I mainly use for touring.
  16. Hello, My bike's MOT is due and as I've only lived here for a few months I dunno the best place to take it - any suggestions? And for a good bike garage in general. Cheers,
