Aviation experts who are raising funds to restore a Lincolnshire Vulcan bomber have at last reached their target - only to be told they need another £500,000. Engineers have been hard at work to bring the 46-year-old Avro Vulcan XH558 back to the skies for the first time in more than a decade. The last time it flew was in the skies around RAF Waddington, near Lincoln. Vulcan to the Sky Trust, which is organising the project to get the machine flying by the end of the year, should have been celebrating reaching the £4.2m target. But instead contractors have told the trust that aspects of the design will cost more than originally expected. As a result at least £500,000 is desperately needed to keep the project afloat. Campaign director Felicity Irwin said: "Our donor base has been tremendous and we've made very good progress with the aircraft. "However, unfortunately the contractors feel that there are aspects that need a higher payment. "It's frustrating but these things happen. "We're totally reliant on donations from the public now and a major sponsor would make all the difference to us. "The publicity for them would be enormous once the plane gets off the ground. "We're still very optimistic that will happen but we have to be realistic and tell people the situation we're in." In 1993 more than 6,000 people watched the Vulcan fly for the last time from RAF Waddington. The plane was then purchased by C. Walton Ltd. For seven years the group of volunteers kept her in good condition. The 106ft-long machine now sits in a hangar at Bruntingthorpe Aerodrome in Leicestershire. Engineers say the repair work is half finished. Vulcan Operating Company spokesman Robert Pleming said: "We've worked really hard and we're looking forward to rolling the aircraft out of the hangar at the end of the summer. "Financially, it's a desperate situation we now face but we're all very keen to keep it going. "From a heritage point of view this project is vital. We want to bring the memory to everyone in Lincolnshire." Bomber Command veteran Douglas Hudson DFC said it is important to get the aeroplane off the ground. "It's good to create awareness to a younger generation," he said. "It would be great to see it fly again and it would be important to Lincolnshire heritage."
