I go to UGC every few weeks so I know what it's like Late night films are always better to see IMHO. Less people. re: Films/tv series for download Ignoring the legalities, its pretty easy to find what you want [i use it for tv series not available here]. Quality when taken from DVD/HDTV is very good. If you want the latest films, go to the cinema tho. For quality and legal reasons!

I just saw you could phone to book - at 25p/min!! I think I'll watch Hero on the big screen, but yes some good films coming up. Quentin no doubt just jelping promote the film - cinemas more likely to take it with a big name attached and people more likely to go see it.
  3. Love the idea of proper markets with fresh food, but castle markets are not the answer. Sorry to anyone who works there but the environment is so, so bad. If you were a student or young professional (as they call us) you probably wouldn't venture there and you certainly wouldn't be proud of it. In a city full of students, thats not a good thing. Sheffield could do with a really good, proper market with high quality produce - proper framers/continental market mixed with some of what is in Castle markets, but in a nice, safe, clean environment that people can be proud of. That entire area is truely awful. I love sheffield but even I can't defend much about our messed up "bitty" city centre, and certainly not castle markets.

Out of interest, many people here go to the cinema or have internet downloads killed it off?! Few decent films on the way, Hero for one. Been wondering about that UGC tenner per month scheme - anyone here go regularly? Can you book tickets online with it?
  5. As someone who gets turned away for no shirt/trainers from various bars/clubs in town, I agree mate!
  6. "you guys..." meaning you guys who are promoting or running club nights. And you can turn people away for anything mate, from experience!!! Glowsticks, limp, posturing, jeans...
  7. Scuba I don't entirely agree mate when you say flexing is part of "a youth culture many don't understand". It's been around for ages, esp. in London, + some of us aren't that old It just isn't a nice culture IMHO. It's up front, aggressive and macho, and its about materialism and showing off. You get the same sorta thing outside the RnB scene, it's just most obvious there at the moment. Just my opinion tho and I've never liked the aspirations and role models often generated, even as a kid. Note I'm not talking about actual violence/gangster stuff altho I agree with you that often they get intertwined and misunderstood. It's a shame because some of the music is great, but many of the guys do little to help themselves by trying to promote how street they still are, their criminal past, anti-gay lyrics, etc. Does my head in that anyone is actually even vaguely proud of being involved with guns or hard drugs. You could argue that this is only a minority I guess. It's very sad that dodgy types tend to hook up with the sort of clubs some of you guys promote and I know people who have loved those nights, but unfortunately the reason they associate with them is because it IS this culture that they want to belong to. How can you make them feel unwelcome without putting off your regular clientele? I have no answers other than trying to keep a friendly and chilled atmosphere and turning away those who are obviously posturing big time. As you say, they'll always want to go somewhere.
  8. http://www.adhdhelp.org/index.htm not sure about some of it but it's a guide at least. IMHO drugs should be the absolute last resort in kids - the brain is still maturing right through the teen years so who knows the long term effect.
  9. can't comment on forceps deliveries other than to say there is nothing conclusive as far as I know and not much you could do about it now anyway. do recommend checking into diet tho. Cut out the crap and have a healthy balanced diet - if it helps it'd probably be within 2-4 weeks. and if it doesn't help, its not exactly a bad thing or costly!
  10. I'm out of it for a while with broken arm number 3, but will join in once doc lets me!
  11. Diet for many kids (and adults) makes a HUGE difference. Cut the fizzy drinks and sweets, and any other sources of additives. Also improve diet generally with fruit and veg. Kinda obvious but people don't equate diet with behaviour when in fact evidence increasingly shows a string link. This goes for adults too.
  12. Dont blame the music/film/games, altho I admit I dont like the culture associated with some types of music as its all about "front/aggression" and bling to get respect - load of absolute rubbish which I hate the way people aspire to. Most trouble is caused by a small criminal element, unhappy upbringings, drug abuse (esp alcohol), etc. Nothing new really.
  13. Yes played twice, still bruised and knackered. Anyway, I cant play wednesdays after 8, fridays before 9, and some saturday daytimes are out. Will play any other time outside work hours.
  14. Because too many parents don't want to deal with kids complaining and many already bring them up on rubbish diets. I may not have liked having to eat healthy food when I was younger, but I'm damn glad I didn't get used to coke, crisps, and chips every night now! Perhaps the folks can be forgiven after all
  15. Diet has a HUGE effect on society. More evidence is appearing of diet's affect on children and adults behaviour, which includes affects on schooling and crime (all ages). However I think people know that they should eat healthily, they just choose not to because they think it's expensive (it isn't, esp if you don't always shop at supermarkets for their rubbish veg!) or they (think they) don't like the food. Or the like sugary foods too much. Don't we all You have to start in children, and that means decent bloody school meals. If you haven't seen Super-Size-Me, a brilliant film about MaccyD's and fast food, then you should. It includes a segment on how healthy school meals cost no less than rubbish ones and probably have a beneficial effect on behaviour.
  16. Price crash? Not going to happen, except possibly at the very top end. It's all relative. The cost of a decent house in crookes or walkley, nice areas, is still far below equivalent houses in many other areas of the country where realistically salaries are little different for the equivalent prospective buyer. Prices may slow down, even stagnate, but they are still below "national market value" in many cases which is why sheffield is a good investment. Also, as others have pointed out, house buying is a UK oddity. In most countries they rent or even build. Buying a house is a strange and very british obsession. Friends in other parts of europe find it very bizarre. First time buyers will take longer to buy a house, will rely on more help from parents, and will rent for much longer. House values may grow slower and houses may take longer to sell. Also bare in mind that sheffield is already odd because in many areas houses go for well above asking price and within 2 weeks. This doesn't happen that much elsewhere, even in a rising market. This is very location dependant tho. Finally, mortgage payments as a % of income are still fairly well balanced and that's probably the overriding consideration.
  17. Ok, view from someone who's family is full of dentists... Evidence time and again shows that when in the water, people's teeth are better. Perhaps it should be a choice, but it works in water and not so sure it works in toothpaste. Not even people in the toothpaste industry have been able to give me answer which must say something! It's believed that the people who get the most benefit from it being in the water are in fact the "poorer" in society, and they are the people who would lose out the most. Also bare in mind that bad teeth can cause health problems elsewhere, particularly when an infection is involved. Sensitive to fluoride? I'm sympathetic, but some people will always have a problem or allergy to something that 95%+ people don't. Fluoride in water or a certain type of pollen (in my case - and its a bloody nightmare), or nuts, etc.
  18. Backing up internetowl (one of the mick's?), the state of local pitches is unbelievabley bad compared to other cities.
  19. Handy... been wanting to start playing badminton again (if I can remember how). If you need another player to get a group together then PM me. Very interested in playing again.
  20. Nice forum, just found it while recovering from a post-leadmill night... first for a while. Place has gone downhill unfortunately but I can't help thinking would be a good time to start promoting it again. Agree about the bouncers in last 2 years. Hardly anywhere those of us who just want a fun night out without dressing up and with decent (indie!) music can go. Could do with a bit of sprucing up but don't make it all bright like every other flipping club and bar. Also agree that the music has got too much of a mish mash - promote a big 80's night, a big 90's night [both with decent music not just the rubbish], and build Saturday's up again. Add a good non-cheesy dance night and student night and there you go. Maybe even a 70s night, tho can't stand it myself! Surely not everyone out there just wants cheesy dance or kingdom rubbish... Or am I on my own and just stuck in the 90's!??! Right, who wants to go to leadmill this week and request a guest listing so we can be shown how good it really is...
