  1. Yes it was the General Cemetery. Perhaps your colleague would be interested in the Morning Song Tour, an RSPB-led walk to see and hear the Cemetery´s bird life. This takes place on Saturday the 12th of May at 10 a.m, meeting at the Anglican Chapel on Cemetery Rd (NB not the gatehouse like most other cemetery tours).
  2. My home internet (Orange livebox) was out between 11 am and about 8.30 pm. The helpline said they were having difficulties and didn't know when it would be back...
  3. The General Cemetery off Ecclesall Rd is a must see Heritage site, see links in signature for events. The next historical tour is on Sundar October 2 at 2pm.
  4. This Sunday's tour of the General Cemetery has been cancelled. Conditions are treacherous underfoot and won't be much improved even if there is a thaw.
  5. Sheffield General Cemetery: Heritage Open Day Sunday 13 September 12noon – 4pm We are putting on our Historical Tour, telling the history of the Cemetery its architecture and notable residents, and the popular Sudden Death Tour returns, with some of the more gruesome and tragic stories of cemetery residents. There is the rare chance to go down into the vaults below the Gatehouse to hear the spooky Tales from the Crypt. Refreshments will be provided and a bookstall and our experts on architecture, family history research, wildlife and conservation will be on hand to answer enquiries. Sheffield General Cemetery is one of the most remarkable urban green spaces in the UK. It contains unique catacombs and nine listed monuments and buildings, including three listed at Grade II, including the stunning Egypto-Roman Dissenters Chapel. It also provides a habitat for a broad spectrum of wildlife, and a stunningly beautiful public space for local people to use for recreation and community events. All activities on the day are FREE (donations welcome). Sunday 13 September 12 – 4 pm at the Cemetery Gatehouse at the top of Cemetery Avenue, off Ecclesall Rd at the Café Rouge Corner. Telephone 01142 268 3486
  6. Sheffield General Cemetery Promenade Theatre Saturday 11 July 11 am and 2pm Sunday 12 July 11am and 2:00 pm The return of the popular Promenade Theatre to the General Cemetery, an annual event deterred only by the heaviest weather. A distinguished personage will guide visitors around the cemetery where they will see entertaining re-enactments of the lives and deaths of some of the Sheffielders buried there. There will be tales of fire and flood, the touching tragedy of George Pischell and Margaret Croft, a romantic elopement and the amazing story of born entertainer, Harvey Teasdale who once sailed on the Don in a boat drawn by ducks (yes he really did!). Meet at the Sheffield General Cemetery Gatehouse, off Cemetery Avenue off Ecclesall Rd on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th July at 11 am and 2pm
  7. Domestic tragedy, dreadful accidents, murder and mystery, the Sudden Death tour is the Chat magazine of graveyard tales. Now they lie in the peace of the General Cemetery, once their deaths made headlines: Elizabeth Firth, murdered by her lover, Ann Watts, dragged to her death by her crinoline, Joseph Simmons who liked to fool around on trains and Thomas Ashworth who made an unfortunate bet regarding a mad dog. Hear too the tragic story of little William Cullingworth, who died, with six other children under a fallen factory wall and of his grandfather, also called William who met his end in a stand collapse at Lincoln races. Meet at the Sheffield General Cemetery Gatehouse, off Cemetery Avenue off Ecclesall Rd on Sunday 5 July at 2.00 pm. Telephone 011422682468 or 0114 335 1853

  10. The Abbey is usually locked, I believe there are services once a month or so. It may well be opened for the Heritage Open days in September however, I saw it a few years ago. The grounds and the little graveyard are worth a look in any case.
  11. I was just coming in here to recommend the General Cemetery, from the memorial garden next to the gatehouse at the Ecclesall Road end to the great views from the Dissenters Chapel, magnificant tombs and ivy draped gravestones, I always enjoy having my lunch outside on a sunny day when I'm working up there.
  12. Sorry, I wasn't clear, I was wondering what their significance was on that particular building. The other name Atlantes refers to Atlas who held up the sky.
  13. One of my favourite things is on the chinese restaurant (Number One's?). There are bearded male figures holding up the columns of the main door. I believe they are called Telamons or Atlantes. They are pretty rare compared to caryatids, female figues serving the same role, I'd love to hear if anyone knows what they represent.
  14. It should be very good, part of our regular programme of events. Good to be on telly though!
  15. Wives and Relicts – the Women of the Cemetery Saturday 7 March 2pm The women of the cemetery, often overlooked in their time, take centre stage as few did in life. Relicts, referring to widows essentially means leavings, an insight into how our ancestors regarded women. Rich or poor, mothers of many or career women this tour looks at lives such as Dr Attracia Rewcastle, the first woman doctor to serve in the navy and Katharine Parker who took on her husband’s business after his sudden death. Meet at the Gatehouse, top of Cemetery Avenue (off Ecclesall Rd at the Cafe Rouge corner)
  16. We have several interesting tours coming up in March Sunday March 1st 2pm Regular tour, learn about the residents of the General Cemetery and it's place in Sheffield's history Saturday 7th March 2pm Wives and Relicts The women of the cemetery, often overlooked in the past, take centre stage as few did in life Saturday 14th March Rock around the General Cemetery A geological tour exploring the many stones used in the cemetery's monuments.
  17. I'm afraid it's too late for this year, we may try them for next year. Thanks for the suggestion.
  18. Our expert wreath maker can't make it and we've been unable to find another (despite posting a request on the craft forums here and exploring numerous other avenues).
  19. Regretably the Christmas wreath making event planned for this Sunday 14th of December has been cancelled. Apologies to those planning to go.
  20. We're in a bit of a fix at the General Cemetery. We have a wreath making workshop scheduled for the 14 of December (1 - 4 pm) and no one to lead it. There's no shortage of helpers but none of those with real expertise can make it on the day. Is there anyone here who can help us out? Expenses will be paid, materials will come from the abundant vegetation of the cemetery itself and additional stuff, like ribbons can be purchased beforehand (we have an account with a craft warehouse). If the Halloween crafts are anything to go by we'll have a good turnout of enthusiastic adults and children. If you can help please pm me or phone the Cemetery on 0114 335 1853 .

  22. I've been told the Star has publicised the wrong time -- it is at 12.30. Munch, the fungi tour only happens once a year I'm afraid. Next event is the regular tour on 2nd November at 2 pm which coincides with the Autumn Pride outdoor activity day being held on Cemetery Green (at the Montague St end of the cemetery).
  23. On Sunday 12 October at 12.30. A fun foray into the fantastical fungi of the General Cemetery! At this time of year the mushrooms and toadstools growing amongst the trees and stones of the cemetery are at their best. On Sunday 12 October come on this free tour guided by Steve Clements, a recorder with the Sorby Natural History Society, who has identified over forty species in the cemetery. Donations welcome. Please meet at the Gatehouse at the end of Cemetery Avenue off Ecclesall rd at 12.30pm.
