  1. Hi Andy and welcome to the Sheffield Forum! I've had a look on your Flickr account and you've got some great pictures on there!
  2. I'm guilty of this. I used to see them in the trees around the cathedral and barely paid them any attention.
  3. Well I took myself off to Middleton Moor at the weekend and I wasn't disappointed. The starling gave breath taking display! Thanks to Sheffsue1 for starting this thread and for everyone else for location information etc! I also took some pics (link below). Although I spent most of the time being mesmerized by the starlings:
  4. Excellent pictures! Was this on Middleton moor?
  5. With regards to anyone who thinks that animals having their throats cut without being stunned don't suffer pain should check out the study done in 2009 by the Massey University in New Zealand. They concluded that animals do suffer pain and distress if they're not stunned prior to having their throats cut. From the article: "The team first cut calves' throats in a procedure matching that of Jewish and Muslim slaughter methods. They detected a pain signal lasting for up to 2 minutes after the incision. When their throats are cut, calves generally lose consciousness after 10 to 30 seconds, sometimes longer. The researchers then showed that the pain originates from cutting throat nerves, not from the loss of blood, suggesting the severed nerves send pain signals until the time of death. Finally, they stunned animals 5 seconds after incision and showed that this makes the pain signal disappear instantly. "It wasn't a surprise to me, but in terms of the religious community, they are adamant animals don't experience any pain, so the results might be a surprise to them," says Johnson. He praised Muslim dhabiha practitioners in New Zealand and elsewhere who have already adopted stunning prior to slaughter. They use a form of electrical stunning which animals quickly recover from if not slaughtered, proving that the stunned animal is "healthy", thereby qualifying as halal." The above is from an article by the New Scientist (this is quite slow to load, about 2 mins): http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn17972-animals-feel-the-pain-of-religious-slaughter.html#.Upg8kOK9E_Q There are other articles on the net about this study but they inclued pictures of animals having their throats cut which are probably to graphic to post here so google "New Zealand Massey University Halal study" if the above link is too slow to load.
  6. Hi sheffsue1, This is something I'd love to see myself. At what time did they start to roost please (about 4pm)?
  7. Hi raymondo, If we're talking about the same shop It was called Marcway in the late 70's, and yes you're right the shop front is different. At some point it relocated further up. If you look at the link below Marcway was the second to last shop in this block. But now it's located where the chemist is, just below what used to be Hitchens. http://www.picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;s24884&pos=2&action=zoom
  8. That would be Marcway models which is still there: http://www.marcway.net/
  9. Looks like the Scots are having similar problems (if not worse) in Govanhill, Glasgow. Our Scotland forum: Roma Gypsies in Govanhill - A nightmare for the residents? http://ourscotland.myfreeforum.org/viewtopic.php?t=6263&start=0 A link from a post in the above forum thread: http://www.heraldscotland.com/the-child-sex-scandal-on-the-streets-of-scotland-1.827784
  10. Looks like the emphasis is actually on the Roma as they have their own section: http://www.migrationyorkshire.org.uk/?page=roma-matrix
  11. I noticed last Saturday that the Roma have now moved into the new houses along Grimesthorpe road (above Smiths field), just up from Page Hall. They've also moved into houses around the top of Ellesmere and Scott Rd. At this rate they should be in Hillsborough by Christmas!
  12. Consider yourself enlightened http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1168536&highlight=page+hall http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1195086&highlight=page+hall http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1147158&highlight=page+hall http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1211877&highlight=page+hall http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1218858&highlight=page+hall http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1220347&highlight=page+hall
  13. Bearing in mind what they've done to the Page Hall area yes it does!
  14. Well I live about 10 mins walk from Page Hall and the people who have moved in look very similar to the Slovakian Roma who live in that area. They also speak with Eastern European accents. But It is a tad presumptuous of me and I could be wrong. Thanks to everyone else for your input. It's appreciated!
  15. Last week in the afternoon an alarm on an empty house that is up for sale on my street started ringing. I had a look through my window to see if everything was okay and I saw an estate agent (I recognise him as he's been back and forth to the house before showing people around) with what looked like a Pakistani couple. The man was wearing a suit and the woman was wearing a saree and head scarf. It looked liked they'd tried to enter the house but forgot it was alarmed. The estate agent was on his mobile presumably getting the alarm code. He then went back into the house to turn off the alarm. After doing that he gave the couple the keys and then drove away and they went inside the house and I didn't think much more about it. But then the next day I saw about 15 plus Roma going back and forth to this house with mattresses and various bits of furniture and I would say at least two Roma families have now moved in but at no point have I seen anyone wearing anything other than the usual track suits and leggings etc. I decided to phone the estate agent as the for sale sign was still up just to check if it had been sold - it had. So I presume the people who were given the keys are the same people that have moved in. So my questions is: Why are Roma gypsies pretending to be Pakistanis to buy property? Surely the estate agents/house owners aren't bothered who buys their property as long as they have the money to pay for it?
  16. Petition signed - Thank you for bringing this to my attention!

  19. I've heard a couple over the last two weeks. One about 3.30am and the other was sometime after 4am. They were both pretty loud and with blackbirds making most of the noise.
  20. You might want to pay a visit to the Shetland Islands http://fair-isle.blogspot.co.uk/2012/11/henry-waxwings-hand-feeding-again.html http://fair-isle.blogspot.co.uk/2010/11/waxwings-oct-25th-2010-day-well-always.html
  21. Glad you like them! I just wish that I could have got a bit closer to them. But I should just be greatful that I managed to find them at all
  22. Managed to get some pics of waxwings around Norfolk bridge on Attercliffe road today. There were about 30 plus waxwings, 29 redwings and 6 blackbirds all picking berries of the various rowan trees.

  24. Just in case anyone is interested there's a twitter feed dedicated to waxwing spotting in and around the UK: https://twitter.com/WaxwingsUK People are posting some great pics on there! Below are a few examples (the last pic was taken in Sheffield). https://twitter.com/kasmunro/status/269801142656065536/photo/1 https://twitter.com/RSPB_OldMoor/status/269160362488782848/photo/1
  25. Spotted a large group of waxwings (60+) at 8am eating berries on trees between Europcar national car hire building and the carpark on corporation street (just below west bar roundabout). They were quite tame as I got within about 5ft of them whilst they were feeding. Unfortunately I didn't have my camera with me as I was on my way to town to do my weekly shop. They eventually flew off towards Neepsend/Shirecliffe.
