  1. Thank you very much! Well if you live in Sheffield kingfishers are living in quite a few areas now. From the River Don to Endcliffe park to Rivelin valley. In fact they will probably be found in lots of areas that has sections of slow moving water tha's clean and well stocked with fish. It's just a case of having the time and patience to find them. Oh, and a fair bit of luck

  4. One of the peregrines is on the perch outside of the box as of 11.55am
  5. So both birds have been seen together this year at St. George's church?
  6. I read somewhere they do this to ward off predators but not sure how true this is. But I too was wondering if the cold weather has anything to do with this because as you mentioned it was pretty cold yesterday and on the last 3 occasions that I went to see them they displayed twice and on both evenings the weather was mild and on the third time it was quite cold and they went to roost straight away. So it could be that if it's too cold they might want to conserve their energy and consequently go to roost straight away? ---------- Post added 04-11-2014 at 11:12 ---------- Excellent! I look forward to seeing them
  7. I climbed over the big silver gate but when I was coming out I noticed people were going through a little side gate (near where the small pine trees are on the right) and then just striding over the barbed wire fence and on to the road. The wire on the fence has a large kink in it and all you have to do is push it down and climb over. So the next time you go up, face the silver gate. Then look to your left and you'll notice the wire fence bows in the middle and you can push it down further and simple climb over it (take some gloves). Then go through the gate on your right and up the track. With regards to times I'd aim to get there for 4pm or a little earlier as one person said the starlings started arriving at 3.50 at the weekend. But I went 3 times last year. Twice in November and once in December and they started arriving at about 4.30pm then so you never know? Hope this helps
  8. Last week I was on the 272 bus at about 6.20am heading to Fox House and a large group of starlings flew along side the bus weaving from one side of the road to the other in one long stream. It last for about 15 to 20 seconds. They appeared just as the bus got onto Hathersage rd. They seem to come from the direction of Ecclesall woods and they flew over Fox House and headed towards Hathersage. Beautiful to see! ---------- Post added 03-11-2014 at 22:59 ---------- I went up the Middleton Moor this afternoon and the starlings started to arrive at about 4.05pm. At about 4.15 we get the first murmuration but it only lasted for a couple of minutes before the starlings went to roost. But no sooner had these disappeared, more starlings started to arrive but they too went to roost very quickly. The starlings kept on coming in larger numbers and from different directions and this lasted till about 4.30pm. One person estimated that we'd seen between 25,000 and 30,000 starlings in over 25mins. And even though the murmuration only lasted a couple of minutes it was still amazing to see so many birds in one place. The same person who estimated the numbers seen also said that we possibly wont see the full mumuration until December and it will be at it's best in January. Regardless I'll be going again soon
  9. Thank you for the update JenC! Edale road here I come

  11. Thank you! I was lucky enough to get on the moors early and catch a decent sunrise.
  12. Excellent pictures Doom Bringer & rpsmith79! Here are some of my Deer pictures from Big Moor. With there been very little cover around the moor it's pretty easy for the hinds to spot you and alert the rest of the group. All of my shots are cropped & taken with a 400mm prime. 13. Hi chrisp7091, First of all I used two lenses. A 75-300mm and a 400mm prime. And yes I used a monopod. I was also knelt down for most of the shots to help keep the camera steady. With regards to focusing I used spot metering with the aperture @ Æ’/6.3 and a Shutter speed of 1/640 (so that I had some blur on the propellers). ISO was around 500. I also fired off lots of frames! And some pictures came out reasonably good and some were rubbish. It's safe to say there was a lot of luck involved. I also used lightroom to clean the images up. Hope this helps
