  1. It was the Tarver fight in Florida. His trainer was Richard Poxon. I was there and our Clinton should never have fought that night. In my opinion (as well as many others) was that the whole set up was a joke. Clinton should have pulled out and got well away from the mottley crew who thought it was one big boys laugh in the sun. They cost him millions.

So was it bad management or promotors to blame.

  2. The Owls have provided us supporters with wonderful entertainment this season ,(if promotion is achieved then even better).

The manager, players chairman, supporters are all singing from the same hymn sheet and it is a smashing day out on match days at Hillsborough.

The Championship is a very exciting league ,A league where all teams can beat each other on the day so I think that even without promotion the future at Sheffields football Mecca looks to be uplifting.

  3. Swearing should be discouraged in all public places. Any idea to improve the ambiance of an area is good forward thinking in my opinion.

Foul language seems to be no longer frowned upon no matter where the area.

I often hear mothers on the school run using the F word in every other sentence this while standing at the school gates setting a wonderful example to their little darlings who will grow up thinking that there is nothing wrong by using the same.

  4. My friends fella said to the police if he catches them harassing his family again he will do just that. The police told him he would be in serious trouble.

A few years ago I caught a man breaking into my work van ,I gave him a crack around the head, he charged me with assault and the police turned up to arrest me!

I got of by claiming I used reasonable restraint.

  5. I pick my hubby and daughter up from every match and the amount of times this season I've seen smashed windows and car alarms going off is unbelievable. Always on Herries Rd around the 5 arches and Herries Rd South near the 5 arches end. There's 1 person taking advantage of the wooded area. It's very prolific. You have been warned!!!

You would think that all the traffic wardens that some how appear around ten mins after the match starts would keep an eye on things.

  6. An interesting thread, samssong.

I’ve not read ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ or ‘The Catcher in the Rye’, although I have seen the 60s film of the former, as well as a couple of stage adaptations.

Generally speaking, I’m more influenced by non-fiction, including biographies and autobiographies, and the novels that have influenced me haven’t necessarily been favourites but those that have pointed me onwards.

I wouldn’t say that novels by the giants that are Dickens and Steinbeck have influenced me greatly, because when I read them, I was already in tune with what they were saying.

For this thread, to boil it down to just two (not based on literary merit by any means): ‘On the Road’ (Jack Kerouac) and ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’ (Charlotte Perkins Gilman).

Try, Up In The Old Hotel by Joseph Mitchell not fiction but, you could not make it up if you tried.

  7. just seen the goal, terrible defending, the cross almost goes the whole width of the pitch not far off the floor height

Westwood should have bent down and picked it up it was that soft a cross.

Three defenders also let it just go [past them.

  8. It seems as though Wednesday are the victims of to many dodgy ref and lines men decisions as of late.

It started at Shrewsbury when in the last minute big Dave was attacked in the box just as he was about to side foot into the net ,from the resulting clearance the Shrews went on to score the winner.

We then moved on to the diabolical decision to send off F.F at Hull a decision so biased as to be on the verge of criminal behaviour by the official.

Then yesterday an equaliser wiped out by the most blatant of wrong off side calls ever witnessed on a football pitch .

And so it goes on with all the T.V. Pundits, fellow managers and sports reporters commenting week after week on the Bad decisions given against Wednesday.

There is now no doubt about it Wednesday are being picked on.

  9. You're nearly as bad as the Catholic Church for preaching!! I'm sure people are intelligent enough to draw their own conclusions!

Well they are still falling over them selves to send their kids to these bloody awful religious schools.

    Schools that encourage separatism.

Welcome to Mastermind, subject... the bleeding obvious

    See above.

  10. Hello,

I'm in the process of making a complaint to iD mobile (mobile phone company), who I have a contract with (a fiver a month for 250 mins, 5000 texts, and 1GB of 4G data).

They're saying (and this is on their main page), that the 1GB is double data, and will revert to 500MB after 12 months.

My complaint, is that this is not what I signed up for. When I signed up, there was no mention anywhere that the 1GB of data would revert to 500MB after 12 months. I've emailed them about this, back and forth a few times, and they've looked at the evidence I've supplied to support my case; but are refusing to change my plan such that it reflects what I actually signed up for.

Now; this is super 'small potatoes' I know; and I appreciate that the customer services reps are likely impotent to make changes to my account, such that it reflects what I actually ordered (they're just trying to fob me off).

However, I feel I've been somewhat duped (seems quite shoddy behaviour on their part), and would like to press the matter, to either get what I signed up for (the 1GB of data not expiring after 12 months), or them admitting that they are in error and have possibly mis-sold? me.

Any advice? Make an official complaint? Is there any external body (ombudsman etc) I should complain to? Or would the issue be too small for them?

Yeah, I know, drop it and focus my time on bigger fish, would be better, totally agree, but you just don't want to feel that people can swindle you and get away with it Scott free.

I cancelled after two days no signal half the time.

  11. I liked both your choices, I read the ragged trousered philanthropist in the eighties when Thatcherism was at its peak. It struck a chord with me then as something that had been written at tha turn of the 19/20 century and still relevant as people were scared then of losing their jobs.

I haven't read Cannery row for a few years but would also recommend 'Sweet Thursday' by the same author. A lot of the same great characters in a story that moves around. Will Doc finally get it off with Suzy? I'll not spoil the ending.

I am going to read it today:)

  12. Academy Awards/Oscars Ceremony watchers will have noticed that Best Picture 2016 was won by SPOTLIGHT, the film uncovering rampant priest-paedophilia in Boston MASS in 2002. (249 cases admitted, involving 1000 children) And then the systematic moving-on of the guilty men to new parishes by Cardinal Bernard Law, Head of the Diocese in order to hide their terrible crimes committed on innocent young children, both boys and girls.

A truly fine film - try to see it … Understated, calm, factual and totally unstoppable as a matter of history …

News-watchers will also have noticed that the Australian Cardinal George Pell (Nº 3 in the Vatican hierarchy and in charge of the RC Church's global finances) is now being compelled on television to give testimony over his own multiple cover-ups and movings-on of priest-paedophiles while bishop of Melbourne/Ballarat in Australia. He is making a very poor show of the denials he offers - but don't take my word for it … just write his name into the BBC News website or Google it … and you will see for yourself. It's all very live at the moment.

After that, then make your own mind up - and don't just believe what you are told. It's a bad, bad habit just to swallow the Church's line uncritically. But then we were all brainwashed into doing it when we were kids.

It's taken a lot of time and a great deal of pain for all this to come out. Don't just shrug it off with the usual : The Church Knows Best .

    It doesn't.

Roman Catholicism along with Russian Communism has kept half the World in poverty for decades.

While at the same time the heads of these institutions have enriched themselves beyond imagination .

  13. Again walked passed the new market today without entering, that rarely happened when walking by the old market.

Why? I had the time, money and there was nothing wrong in getting few things.

It does not feel like a real market to me anymore, it feels like some struggling lost failing venture pretending to be a market while having lost that lively charm that all the markets I have been to worldwide vibrate like music.

    You sound like Cuittsie:hihi:

  14. The Bath literature festival has voted the novel To kill A Mockingbird as the most influential novel of all time followed by Catcher in The Rye.

Although I love both novels they do not get near my own favourites that are.

Cannery Row by John Steinbeck and The Ragged Trousered Philanthropist by Robert Trestle .

Another is ,Up In The Old Hotel, by Joseph Mitchell a book you can re read time and time again and still come up with a different ending.

    Any Thoughts .

  15. Perhaps the new Market has found its niche, Sharan from Sharans cafe has started community programmes for customers ,booking turns and encouraging customers to join in with the singing [page 36 todays Star] .Good owd Sharan!. an old time stall holder who has always known what her customers like about Markets .

The new Sheffield foot tappers and shunters club has been born .

  16. We live in a constantly changing world and that is hard to accept when industries are out priced by newcomers and jobs lost. Too many countries producing steel has led to a change in the markets - but is the quality of foreign steel crap? No it's not.

It always makes me laugh when I hear the North East going on about what brilliant ships they built. We haven't built a decent ship here since around 1950. Take a look at how they do it in Japan and now that has lost market share to South Korea and upcoming is China. There is no way we could compete with their methods though plenty of Brits are out there overseeing the builds in these high tech sites. Been and seen it myself.

I never understand why sons are expected to follow fathers in cutlery, steel or down the pit. They were dirty, dangerous jobs and some knew no other work. Time to move on. Some kids will always just want or suit shelf stacking but there are other choices if they just think outside the old ways and maybe outside of S Yorks.

Perhaps we should follow Japans idea on how to build power stations.
