  1. I also see some of those have already shut down? the Pizza place I havent seen open and a coiple selling pies and baked goods seem to have started and closed.

Anyone verify this? I know soemtimes they only open on certain days.

If the rents are half of what they should be then who is paying for the Market .

I ask this because the rents where originally meant to cover the building costs and a loan that goes well into this century .

That is what the Sheffield Telegraph stated a couple of years ago.

  2. The ugly reality that huge groups of culturally incompatible mysoginistic fighting age males forcing their way into our countries while having nothing but contempt for our cultures is not going to end in everyone holding hands and singing kum by ya.

    But you knew that, right?

Fighting age males who should be doing the right thing and defending their own Country instead of leaving the weak and helpless behind to their fate.

  3. SO another adventurer has died while walking to the South Pole [Henry Worsley] .

But why do they do it ? Why climb Everest or cross the Sahara or trek to the most inhospitable places on Earth in the name of charity [often putting others in danger who try to rescue them and also leaving family's without a father or mother to fend for them as they grow up].

Would it not be easier to cycle across Europe ,America or Russia for instance or walk from Lands End to John O Groats etc, Why do they put their lives and others at risk .

  4. As quoted in earlier post "Construction & demolition works that are audible at the site boundary shall only take place between 7.30 - 18.00 hrs Monday to Friday ; 8.00 - 13.00 hrs on Saturdays.

Personally I'd probably give them the benefit of the doubt that it was a "one off" but if it continues they are breaking their planning application conditions which are enforceable. That particular condition was put in place to make the works

Thats it then the lads are out of order

    see next post.

  5. So are you suggesting that to many builders, the building regulations are secondary to the builders needs? I'm not sure that that would be the attitude I'd want from builders working for me.

Building regulations apply to the actual building work and have nothing to do with noise .

How many on these threads have to do D.I.Y at weekends for instance or have had a mate of a mate to do them some cash in hand at weekends when that is the only time either party can actually do the work.

Most of the moaners I would like to bet.

There is also some work that can only be done at weekends.

  6. I'm sure that the OP isn't alone in hoping that houses are built to the building regulations. You'd have to question that if the site is happy to skip around one regulation to get the job done as fast as possible, what other regulations were ignored.

I can understand the noise aspect of Industry having lived in the East end of Sheffield when the hammers and rolling mills were at full tilt [wish they would return tomorrow].

However I have worked in the building trade and I can assure you that it is a trade governed by the weather.

A team of bricklayers for instance may be laid of due to rain ,frost or snow.,Come the weekend and the sun comes out so they decide to make hay while the sun shines .

Bingo they have some wages to come in .Then the nimby's start complaining about noise , dust, mud on road and so on .

So the family's of the building workers end up with no money usually around this time of year.

Building work is not like sitting in a cosy office or call centre or shop work it is work when the work is there or possible.

  7. No idea what building you mean at number one?

Agree with Number 2 - I think you mean St Pauls Tower. Too slab like for a skyscraper in my mind, and with awful grey edges, and brown cladding on the sides. Never a good mix. Don't mind the way it stands over the Peace Gardens and Tudor Square so much, but it did ruin the view up Leopold Street looking towards the Town Hall.

Number 3. Well, ultimately a Mosque that actually looks like a Mosque is rarely going to look like it fits in amongst pre-war british terraces, but actually I don't mind that one with regards how it sits amongst those houses. I think the bigger problem with it is the garish tones of yellow and green cladding on the walls and at the top of the minarets respectively. Looks a bit cheap.

Yep, hate the Moorfoot Building. Seems to divide opinion though.

That church on Ecclesall Road; interestingly, the older church building still survives behind it. You can see a little sticking out in your picture, but looking from above in Google Earth gives a good idea of how that concrete facade sits in front of the older one.

Some call no one the diamond .

  8. Over the last ten years or so Sheffield has witnessed some of the most horrendous Architecture ever inflicted on the City.

Number one has to be the awful structure at Brookhill on the site that used house Jessops Hospital .

It looks similar to a giant tennis ball that has been encased in a colander it makes no attempt what so ever to fit in with the surrounding environment or to have any redeeming feature to enhance the area at all.

Number two on the list is the Multi Floor sky scraper building that is just of the Piece Gardens [a private apartment building I presume ].

How could this monstrosity have passed the council planners .

The building completely over powers the lovely square that houses the winter gardens and St Pauls hotel as well as the Lyceum and Crucible theatres.

Number three is the Mosque at Heeley a building so at odds with its surroundings as to be beyond belief .

The Green towers stick up into the sky as though they have been designed by an alien from another Planet and it is another build that has made no attempt to fit in with the traditional Sheffield landscape or area.

    Any more contenders welcome.

  9. The Moor in Sheffield is now half way into its new look.

What do you think , should it be open to public transport, should the building that cuts it of at the bottom be removed so as to allow through traffic .

What about the new building work does it inspire you or is it just much the same as the rest or even the ones that have been replaced .

Will the new Primark be a success now that it is not situated at the prime tram stop in the City centre meaning that a bit of a walk will be necessary to get there.

Should the Moor be the prime shopping area or just an off shoot from the proposed new retail area on Camebridge Street,

  10. Is it a case its non transparent?

They are trade talks, complex and boring. If you wnat to find out about them just google. I wouldnt expect the commission to give monthly updates.

Is it a case its non democratic?

Wouldnt the people who get to sign off be the Council of ministers who would need to ratify the agreement? They are the democratically elected representatives.

If we dont sign up to this, then you have to decide whether its better for the Uk being in or out. If the UK is excluded, then its highly likely business will want its own deal with the US. Its also unlikely the UK will eb able to negotiate a better deal.

We should leave this Franco German club as soon as possible .

We should also ask all the immigrants who have come here but do not work to go back home .

Please note the do not work comment before the usual suspects jump on board.

  11. On the main road from Middlewood into Oughtabridge some utility or road mending firm has erected temporary traffic lights .

They have been there for around a week and at peek times lead to heavy tail backs of traffic in both directions .

This in turn means thousands of pounds of wasted fuel and time for motorists and transport companies.

The problem is that no one is doing any work whatsoever , no sign of any work vehicles, equipment or indeed workmen.

Now this is not an isolated instance around Sheffield it happens all over the City where the phantom traffic lights are set up and nothing seems to happen for days or weeks, why are these company's [or council] aloud to get away with causing so much delay and fuel wastage when they have just gone away and abandoned the job.

  12. I have taken over an allotment last year.

The grass was waste high so I covered it with old carpet to kill it off

I have just uncovered it and started to dig the plot but to my dismay the grass roots go about 15 inches down at least ,they are tangled up in a complete underground carpet and it is almost imposable to dig.

The roots do not look as though they have died off.

Am I wasting my time is there any way to get rid of this mess any advice would be appreciated.

  13. Yesterday I visited an old friend who is unwell and who has lived on the Gleadless Valley for forty five years.

It is around fourteen or fifteen years since I last visited the area and to say I was shocked would be an understatement to say the least.

This once proud estate that once had visitors from the four corners of the Globe to marvel at its Architectural design and outlook has sunk into a sad sorry mess.

As I walked up the surrounding roads and footpaths that used to be so pristine with tendered gardens and cared for backyards all that greeted my eyes was mounds of rubbish strewn across the very same gardens or thrown from balconies onto the walkways.

The hedge bottoms are littered with discarded beer and pop cans along with shoes, clothes and nappy liners .

Standing like beacons among all this distressing scene are the odd houses that are still well cared for although they seem to be in the minority now in my friends surrounding area.

So what has happened to this once proud social housing estate that was the pride of Sheffield at the beginning of the sixties through to the early nineties ,why has it deteriorated so sadly.why has it been allowed to do so.

It seems as though some people have no pride and they seem to be slipping back into the stone age .

  14. Although I very rarely watch them these days on the rare occasion that I have glanced the T.V[ while my belovered is engrossed in the latest Emerdale Farm or Eastenders episode] the men portrayed all seem to work in jobs that at one time would be considered rather pansyfide .

They are working in sweet shops, nicker factories, bar managing or other jobs that at one time the girls did.

As to the ladies the majority seem to have just been dressed by Christian Dior and made up by Max Factor even when they have just got out of bed in a morning or walked through a blizzard to the Rovers or Woolpack.

One exception to the trend is Coronation Street that still has a car mechanic and a builder although they both seem to do more snogging and canoodling with the aforementioned short skirted, low top, lipsticked plucked eye mob than mending cars or building semi detached houses.

So what has happened to this British institution that at one time had road sweepers, bin men, postmen ,hookers and cleaners as the main characters.

Myself I now prefer the House Wives of Beverly Hills or New Jersey to our own pampered soap stars as they seem to have real men with big muscles and women that are glad of em.
