  1. Depending on your computer savvy, you might want to try ephPod (http://www.ephpod.com/) for Windows. It will allow you to copy songs from iPod to PC. But be careful because it can do lots of other things, like wipe your iPod if you ask it to :S
  2. Hi Folks. Long time listener, first time caller. Due to a series of DLT 4000/8000 Tape Drives dying this week from a variety of complications, I have urgent need of one over the weekend. Does anyone have such a beast they know to be working? I'm flexible on going to the drive or the drive coming to us. Thanks! :-)
  3. I'm due to move house on Saturday morning and had a van booked with the Pegeot garage at the end of Ecclesall Road for weeks. I phoned up this morning to confirm the price and they told me that it was never booked! So... I'm looking around for people with vans who could perhaps move me and my two housemates on Saturday morning. I've phoned around the city centre van rental companies (Hertz, Enterprise, 5th Gear...) but most of the vans are already out. The ones that do have vans close at 12:30 and we need to get the van back to them on the same day as we were getting a friend to drive it (none of us can drive it) and he's only available until Saturday afternoon. We're moving from Hunter's Bar to Nether Edge so it should only take 2-3 hours, I reckon. It should be possible to get it done in one run, two max.
  4. Everyone and their dog has a Mac Mini. A G4 shows a bit of class :-) Let me know how you get on with it.
  5. Hey DB, I think the G4's don't support single 1GB sticks, only 512MB. Jigsaw are not the best prices, but they do better customer service. I'd go direct with Cruicial. Noone I know has had a problem buying direct with them. £77 inc. free shipping. http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/MPartspecs.Asp?mtbpoid=1B359626A5CA7304&WSMD=Power+Mac+G4+%28466%2C+533%2C+667%2C+and+733MHz%29&WSPN=CT223767 If price is *really* an issue, you can go with eBuyer, but their customer service generally sucks. £70 with free shipping for the 'proper' Mac memory: http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=9855403760&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=29659 If you're feeling wild and adventurous you could try this memory at £55 shipped: http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=9855403760&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=62334 No reason why it shouldn't work. The G4's are quite forgiving about memory types. Any of the others would be good for peace of mind, though. I've only got a stick of 128MB spare that would fit the G4, which is not enough for a big improvement for you :/
  6. The Mac Mini is a nice piece of kit. With a big stick of memory in, it will outperform your current kit quite handily. I've used the mac mini and an ibook 12" and they're both decent machines for photoshop and indesign work, but you can't run too many app's at the same time and as a PC user they can be frustratingly slow in comparison. You'll have very little room for upgrades, which is a problem for you as a designer. As everyone else has said, the sensible choice is to add more RAM to the G4, which you should be able to pick up for next to nothing. I've got some sticks of RAM lying around that would suit I'm sure. Go for 1GB if you can manage it. After that, save up for a G5 :-) And having said all that, I'm considering selling my Mac Mini as I don't use it much, it's just a very pretty file server at the moment. *reads the post* I've confused you now, haven't I? :-)
  7. My snapshot: Best Dim Sum: Zing-Vaa Best for larger groups: Candytown Best Buffet: Jumbo's (Hit and miss tho) Best Noodles: Noodle Bar on London Road Best for Corporate Entertaining: Canton Orchard Try a Thai?: Baan Thai A bit of Everything: East Ocean Cafe Overpriced: Hui Wei Personal Fave: Mei's Takeaways: Many! There's new places popping all the time that are worth a try tho.
  8. These roofs are part of the 'Entende Florale' competition that's going on, along with the statues outside the Town Hall. They are placed along the judging route only (i.e. West Street) and are meant to demonstrate green roofs. There was a leaflet explaining this in the Botanical Gardens at the weekend where they were growing some of the turf.
  9. Think I saw this same convoy going down Brocco Bank around 10:15.
  10. Yes. Yes I have. Just the once. Got a good welcome mind, and a few good games of pool.
  11. Hmmm. Walking past Groucho's on Ecclesall Road, the chalkboard has the message: "From all Groucho's staff, thank you. 17 years. Goodnight!" They are also not answering their phones for booking. The word on the streets is a change of ownership or possibly just ceased trading? Can anyone provide some hard news on this? Thanks.
  12. Here's the other thread on this subject: http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7805 Quite a few reviews in there.
  13. These guys have done 'pong' on an office building you can play via mobile phone. Tetris has been done somewhere too. http://www.blinkenlights.de/ But the arts tower would be ideal for such an effort :-) You could probably have a stab at motion video on it with a superbright LED array on the building. I'd love to put that project together if some wealthy corporate backer would like to step forward :-). I'm sure you could do a safe, efficient system for the arts tower for under £15K. Especially with input from the Uni's many excellent boffins. A mere snip for a world record contender :-)
  14. The food is well cooked, well presented, fresh and tasty. Just about everything a Japanese restaurant shoud be in that respect, and a cut above your Yo Sushi! restaurants and the poor excuse for sushi they sell in M&S and Tesco. They also have more choice items like premium sake (served cold) and a wide range of sushi. The staff are very friendly and helpful though still a little disorganised. Once they've ironed out these kinks, the place should be a top notch night out. You can also eat yourself silly, feel you've had very good food and not feel uncomfortably bloated. Which is strange experience after the all-you-can-eat explosion in Sheffield. Two thumbs up!
