  1. I'd guess that he's doing it because its what his mates do and it really isn't seen as a big deal by many people. If he is only smoking it occasionally then there is less chance of it being harmful to his health or affecting his day to day mental functioning etc. In my experience its only when people smoke it lots that its negative effects become more likely (and the more you tell him not to do it, the more likely he is to do it more!) Also, I don't think you should necessarily think cannabis will lead to harder drugs - as someone on here has already said, that tends to be more dependent upon the social circle you are in. In a way you should feel glad that you are aware of what he is doing and have a chance to understand him better. I'm sure it will all work out! Good luck!
  2. Yeah I know - I felt so sorry for the kid that was what swung it really...but the con artists know that!! So horrible!
  3. My friend and I got stopped and asked for money by a well dressed, well spoken blonde woman with her brunette child in tow (who was 6-7 years old maybe) near Spa by the train station last night. Story was she'd had her wallet stolen in meadowhall and needed £12 for a bus... I gave her some money because I would always want someone to help me if I ended up in that kind of situation. But what she was saying sounded rather well rehearsed and looking at her face it seemed to me that she was lying. Has anyone else experienced this - or am I being super cynical??
  4. I feel intimidated by groups of youths because of prior experience. When I was a 'youth' myself groups of kids I vaguely knew from school often hung round my local shops. If they were bored they pretty much always shouted abuse at you, made lewd remarks or took the mickey (any of these are mortifying when you are a teenager buying milk for your mum!!) Now I'm mid-twenties I feel the same fear/dread around large groups of youths but I don't appear to be regarded as a target anymore and am ignored (touch wood!). Most of the time these groups are so inveagled in their own business they don't even notice you, and as has already been said they are often really nice kids. But there is always a chance that they might be kids looking for trouble or who are particularly bored one night and that they might target you with abuse/missiles etc etc for a laugh. As well as being targeted by such groups as a youth, I also hung out on the streets with groups myself (as everyone does!) - and you easily get absorbed into the group mentality and can't see things from other people's perspective. When you see a group of youths you just don't know which type of group they are going to be - so its natural to feel apprehensive initally. I think as long as you can recognise that groups of youths are not always monsters, and can be nice, harmless kids (as the initial poster did) then its ok to be wary at first until you have ascertained what the situation is!
  5. Register with more agencies - there are TONS of them - and I bet they will all suddenly phone you up at once with job offers so you get to choose! This tends to be the way it works with temp jobs - a bit like busses...
  6. I'm afraid you don't get paid any extra holiday pay (or sick pay, usually!) if you are a temp. They include the holiday pay you are entitled to in your hourly rate. Sorry!
  7. In Manc and Leeds the buildings are so tall - they remind me of London, you can walk down busy streets and only see a strip of sky above you, towering buildings either side. In Sheffield, because of its different architechure and hilly landscape, you can always see into the distance - to the hills that surround the city, and I think this makes it seem less oppressive than some other major cities. Perhaps contributes to the un-city-like feel???
  8. Well I came to Sheffield as a student, am originally from Stoke-on-Trent/ Staffordshire area - and I have no idea what you lot are on about!!! I guess if you have nothing to compare it to then its easy to complain about Sheffield clubbing. But, like green pointed out earlier, there are plenty of great clubbing opportunities in Sheffield!! Whats more - in Sheffield the attitude is friendlier, dress-codes are more relaxed and crowds are more mixed than the many nites I've been to in other bigger cities like Leeds and Manchester. There's less hassle and more opportunity to enjoy yourselves!! So stop complaining and get out there!
  9. The thing that annoys me is that by increasing fares by these odd amounts it makes it harder for people to get the exact change for the bus (e.g. I think someone said a weekly pass was going up by 20p or something - so instead of just getting out a tenner you now need extra change too). So not only is your bus late, but the bus driver is incredibly grumpy as each stop he has to scrabble for change. Even if the extra charges pay for the upkeep of the busses etc. (obvioulsy v important), they definitely don't improve service at the sharp end!!
  10. 'Fopp' has tons and tons of good cheap dvds, from £3-£10. Its on Division Street in town.
  11. The Forum (Division Street/Devonshire Green) sometimes cordon off areas for partees. Also have been to a few group partees of about the size you mention at Bar Matrix or Empire Bar down in town, they are functional but I think a bit trendy/studenty. I think Vodka Revolution in West One might have a bit you can hire out too.
  12. I'm not a food critic, but I went in last night and had a great time! I'd never eaten Japanese food before and it was the weirdest meal I've ever had - in a good way! (For main I had cold buckwheat noodles with a spicy soy-type sauce to dip them in - tasty once I'd got used to it!). The staff were really helpful telling me what everything was - and more importantly how to eat it!! I'd definately go back. The teppan-yaki (when they cook it infront of you) looked fun too, so will prob do that next time. If you don't have teppan-yaki, you can either have lots of little dishes, like Japanese tapas, or have a main noodle-based course and a side dish. Menu is reasonably priced. Its nicely done out inside, modern but cosy. I'd recommend it!
  13. I think its because of all the hills we have to walk up! Even a short stroll to the shops/pub involves some kind of incline in Sheffield!
  14. Has anyone tried Wasabisabi, the new Japanese restaurant on London Road yet? Whats it like? I'm thinking of going there later this week but wanted to know what people reckon to it?
  15. If you get in there early (register a month or so before you want to start work as they get busy with students working in summer) a Recruitment Agency would be your best bet, they often have office-y jobs and you can start/stop when you like. There are loads in Sheffield, check out the phone book or have a wander round near the Cathedral in town centre ('Personnel Services' on Leopold St are good too). Plus you can let them know about your langauge skills and you never know, they might be able to match you up with an employer that wants that sort of thing.
