  1. Xavi, Busquets and Iniesta makes Barcelona tick.
  2. Based on the last two season's La Liga statistics, Ronaldo is responsible for 56% of Real Madrid's goals; Messi scores 57% of Barcelona's. Real Madrid would suffer just as much as Barcelona without their star player.
  3. Thank you everyone, I'll have a think about it some more.
  4. I am thinking about signing up to www.ancestry.co.uk to piece together my family tree. Has anyone here used it, or something like it, and had and success? I have a lot of family overseas and wondered if the site is useful for finding them.
  5. Prometheus: 2/10 It's 30 years since Ridley Scott made a great film so I wasn't expecting much, but this is an utterly awful film in almost every way: plot holes the size of the Peak District; terrible acting from the lead; embarrassingly ill-conceived dialogue; preposterous and unexplained actions from the crew; rubbish aliens; zero suspense; predictable 'alligator eggs in the sewer' ending. The best thing about this film is the performance of Michael Fassbender as an android with no emotions. That speaks volumes. Taken: 4/10 Reasonably enjoyable action scenes make up for the ridiculous plot developments.
  6. It's a game we can win... I think; it'd be nice to win a couple of away games.
  7. Good signing, but Fergie needs more than a striker to make sure they have a superior goal difference to City - a solid midfielder has been missing for some time now.
  8. Perhaps signing Messi is a little too ambitious; we should sign Neymar instead.
  9. Were Wednesday fans responsible for the club's financial problems before the Mandaric takeover? Of course not. Fans stay away from games for a number of reasons, to list just a few: poor league standings; star players sold and not replaced; poor performances; high ticket prices; family or job commitments. It's the responsibility of the club alone to identify and address any attendance or financial issues, so I don't think it's in any way fair to blame fans for redundancies at Bramall Lane. I like bees, but I don't own an apiary. Should I be held responsible for the declining bee population and the rising price of honey?
  10. I've been watching this Argentine lad in Spain by the name of Messi - he's not half bad; Wilson should stick a bid in for him.
  11. According to an article in The Guardian, there's some turmoil at Sheffield Springs Academy this year. "Some well-known academies are facing an exodus of teachers this summer, Speed Read has learned. Sheffield Springs academy, run by the United Learning Trust charity, is poised to lose at least 25 teaching staff, insiders tell us, while the troubled school is on its third principal of the academic year. This comes after a new permanent head was recently appointed, only to then turn the post down, the ULT citing "family circumstances". In February, Ofsted inspectors criticised the "significant instability in leadership and management" since the academy was established in 2006, as it was then on its fifth principal in that time. Now it's on its sixth." 25 teachers leaving, 3 headteachers in 1 year, and the new headteacher withdrawing from post before starting the job... Does this sort of thing happen often?
  12. The Guardian reported earlier today that Harry Redknapp was on the verge of being sacked, and the BBC have now confirmed he has left Tottenham. Should it emerge Spurs sacked Redknapp - which seems likely - they should be applauded for doing so: Redknapp publicly courted Fabio Capello's job for over a year, repeatedly risking the confidence of his own players and chairman; he refused to negotiate a contract extension from his employer, preferring instead to continue pining for the England job; when it finally became available he was too distracted by the England vacancy to bother managing his own club properly; and, after all that, Redknapp farcically demanded a new contract to "Avoid unsettling players". The man has shown scant regard for loyalty to the biggest club he's ever likely to manage, and deserves none in return.
  13. I am considering writing to a company providing a range of entertainment services regarding a position I wish to take up. The twist is the company is not, so far as I am aware, currently recruiting for this or any other position. Without wanting to go into too much detail there is a noticeable gap in their marketing and merchandising as compared to their competitors; I have some ideas as well as the relevant skills to attempt to change this, but I have never approached an employer in this way before. Does anyone have any advice on how to proceed? I am wary of coming across as arrogant, and while I have firm ideas on how they can improve I do not want to give these away ideas free of charge. I am particularly keen to read an employer's thoughts - how would you respond to an outsider asking you to hire them after highlighting a weakness in your business?
  14. I live near Meadowhead, and since last night (14/04/12) I've had consistent pixelation and sound loss across all channels on my LG Freeview TV. Annoyingly all channels - BBC, ITV, C4 included - are affected. I've turned the tv off, checked all connecting cables and aerials, and even completely retuned the tv; unfortunately I'm still having the same problem. I've checked online and there appears to be no problems with the transmitters for my area. Any ideas?
  15. Meadowhead School is a specialist language college, may be worth trying there. http://vle.meadowhead.sheffield.sch.uk/
  16. Before the start of the season I would have been delighted, after all the turmoil and expected loss of players due to relegation, with a mid-table finish; Wilson has surpassed my expectations and, while it would be a shame to miss out on promotion, should be applauded for his work.
  17. Your kids are right, Springs Academy have asked pupils to stop using slang; interview with ULT deputy chief executive Cathy August in the Guardian.
  18. Springs Academy, and the academies program, was started under Labour.
  19. Harry Redknapp is probably the best English choice; Mourinho if we're talking dream appointments. That said, it doesn't really matter who gets the job: England are not likely to win a major tournament for many years. Capello is rightly considered one of the best managers in the game. While he undoubtedly made a few mistakes as England manager, anyone who thinks a change of coach will turn us into a side capable of beating the likes of Spain, Holland, Germany, Italy or France is mistaken: the new manager will have to choose from the same pool of players as Capello.
  20. I have been working in a secondary school for the last two years. Initially my role was as a Teaching Assistant, but in time it has expanded to be a mixture of TA, cover supervisor - covering a variety of lessons during teacher absence - and instructor - planning, teaching and assessing my specialist subject twice per week. Last year I applied for a PGCE but, despite being accepted following a strong interview, funding issues meant the course was withdrawn. By this stage all similar PGCE courses, Teach First and the Graduate Teacher Programme were full. I decided to stick with my job and apply again the following year. Unfortunately, twelve months on I've had similar luck regards getting onto a course. I have a mortgage and live with my partner; although I have not completely ruled out moving to another city for a PGCE this option is not desirable. Teach First and Sheffield Hallam University's GTP courses are full. My degree and college qualifications are in Graphic Design, so this really narrows down what I can apply for. Is there another way for me to train to be a teacher? If not, what other options are open to me? While I have had my heart set on teaching, should I give up for now and explore other options?
  21. I want to properly insulate the loft, lay some stable flooring, create decent access and use it as a storage space albeit with natural light coming in. There's no way I could afford a full loft conversion, besides which it wouldn't add significant value due to the location. Thank you for the posts, I will speak to the council this week.
  22. I am considering installing two Velux windows in the roof of my property, a terrace house at Lowedges. Perhaps this is a silly question, but do I need permission from the council for this? Thanks
  23. I'm sure I don't need to point out the irony of criticising my grasp of language and scolding me for an alleged inaccurate translation - a translation I didn't make by the way - before going on to spell the word 'scourge' incorrectly in the same sentence. I have cited two of the sources supporting this particular translation; the second of these - the Supreme Islamic authority of Al-Azhar - is considered to be the "Chief centre of Arabic literature and Islamic learning in the world", and the most esteemed university in Egypt by the Encyclopaedia Britannica. Many people would take that to be a fairly reputable source, and is a translation that at the very least has some academic support. If you know of a reason why this particular translation should not be trusted, then please enlighten me; if something I read is factually incorrect I sincerely want to know why.
  24. Just checked my copy of the Koran and it's an Everyman's Library / Millennium Library edition. According to the liner notes the translation is supported by the Royal Aal al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought, and "...is the only English translation to have received the approval of the Supreme Islamic authority of Al-Azhar in Cairo."
