  1. Thanks. It does indeed say there's problems with a mast though there was nothing earlier. Pretty frustrating really, and not the first time it's happened
  2. Been having a nightmare with my phone since yesterday lunchtime. My daughter who's also on O2 is having the same. Outgoing calls, incoming calls and text both ways. No problem with Internet. Have sent texts that haven't got there. Received some but not all and they're usually from ages ago. People ringing me and it going to voicemail. Anyone got a clue why this is happening? O2 website, as usual, says everything's fine in the area.
  3. Well you learn something every day. Been coming on here over 2 years and had no idea there was a Pet Owners Section. Not on the Home Page so I imagine most people don't know about it.
  4. Has anyone lost a friendly Staffie in the Meersbrook area ? He's brown with 2 white paws and a white chest. A friend has him at her house and would like to reunite him with the owner ---------- Post added 18-12-2013 at 09:09 ---------- Just a heads up to anybody who viewed this post last night. The dog has been reunited with its owner. Had been missing from Gleadless since Saturday night. Facebook 1-0 Forum on this occasion !
  5. Woods Markets were bought out by Circle K who had shops down south and were trying to expand up north. It was a short lived exercise as their whole operation in this country collapsed and they were taken over by Tates Lateshopper who were based in Grimsby. They in turn became part of Blakemores who trade under the Spar brand. The original Woods on Abbey Lane was run by Willie and Dora Wood with Frank and Barry, their sons. I think it was when the parents retired that they started the expansion that created the chain of shops. Sadly it was shortly after they sold out that Frank died of a heart attack. Barry and his wife Jackie went to the Isle of Man. The Woods were and still are a lovely family. Frank, in particular, was a real gentleman.
  6. Youre probably right. I was probably that far gone by the time they opened the food hatch I'd no idea if I'd paid for it, somebody else had or it actually was someone else's. I'm sure, on most occasions, we'd had a few in The Abbey before we set off. Can anyone remember when it changed from Fiveways to Fanny's or was it the other way round?
  7. Yep. Remember having burger and chips in the plastic baskets. Can't remember having to pay for it though. Was it free with admission?
  8. I'm sure Henshaw was the name of the Head Postmaster sometime in the late 60s. I can't remember how long for though
  9. I think Charlie and my dad had a shared interest in hi-fi outside of work. I vaguely remember going round to their house to hear his system . Think it was the first time I'd ever heard stereo sound. My dad would have been a messenger pre-war. When he joined up he was in the Royal Engineers Postal Section
  10. I remember now that Charlie had a brother who was at Fitzalan Sq/ Pond St. Charlie used to pop round to see my dad quite often. I seem to remember him bringing a daughter who'd be round about my age ( 60ish ). Did they live at Frecheville ?
  11. Hi Starmandave Was Fred related to Charlie Buttery who was PO welfare officer, I think, during the 50s ?
  12. Hi grenoside 123 I think the last time I saw Terry was at Dads funeral in 1969. Betty will definitely remember him. My family was very involved in the Post Office. My dad , my brother, my cousin Michael and his dad Frank who worked for PO Telephones.
  13. Hi Rob, You must be Brian's brother? Can you give my regards to Ian Barker when you see him. Just tell him Malcolm's brother would like to be remembered to him. Thanks ---------- Post added 21-11-2013 at 21:50 ---------- Hi grenoside 123. My dad and Terry were big mates. I think they worked together in Survey Branch at Fitzalan Sq. I think he lived on Rowan Tree Dell at Totley
  14. Hi grenoside 123 My dad Horace Hibberd was a big friend of Terry. I can remember him coming round to our house. I think he progressed through the post office network with my dad. My brother Malcolm was also a messenger during the early 60s. Terry would have been a messenger pre war
  15. My partner lived on Howden St till around 1964. Her name was then Janet Hanson and she went to Maltby St school. Her dad was Les, who was a builder, and her mum was Daisy.
  16. Probably ' nail on head ' there Philip. If you look at the photo of 1(3) where Chris has got his hands on Paul Jeffries shoulders, it sums him up really. When you realise how many are of our contemporaries are now ' absent friends' it's a sobering thought. Too many names mentioned in this thread alone. Probably time I got out more instead of spending hours on History and Expats !
  17. Hi Paul. I'd forgotten that John Burgin was called Ted. Of course now you've reminded me I can't believe how I forgot it! Was big mates with Sid in and out of school for some time but then lost touch, as you do. Others I hung around with were Pete Warburton, Roger Taylor, Graham Hathaway, Paul Harrison. There's loads actually. If I look back at some of those photos and feel like half the school were 'mates'. Did go to the Mojo on a couple of occasions to see Spencer Davis but, living at Totley, it was a bit of a haul on the bus. No 3 wheeler luxury for us! Hi Philip On your leaving photo I see youre there with Chris Hobson. He was another larger than life character. Do you know what happened to him? Sorry about Baggi Wright. Really nice lad.
  18. Apology accepted. You wouldn't have enjoyed having to sit outside the Headmasters room which is what I nearly threatened you with. I was just ruminating about change in attitudes in our time there. There were some masters who obviously were less stuffy than others. I remember one English lesson a pupil called John Cooke aka 'Bols' being allowed to write the words to ' Poetry in Motion ' by Johnny Tillotson on the board and then having the mickey taken out of it. This was a huge success so he allowed Bols to bring his Beatles ' Please Please Me ' album in the following lesson to be played in class. Can't remember which master it was though. Can any of you recall the final assembly one year when the same John Cooke and a n other played Nutrocker by BBumble and Fats Dominos Blueberry Hill on the piano ? Nat and Flinky nearly choked on their gowns. Yes it sure was a different world back then
  19. C'mon Philip. Wake up at the back boy. I PMd you a few times last year. On one of the form photos somebody's actually included my nickname in the roll call
  20. Hi Paul I cant remember now who the other ' hair ' rebels were. Frank may have been one but I'm not sure. Met up with him a few times for drinks several years after leaving. He was a good lad but I don't think one of Nat's favourites by a long chalk. Do you recall John Burgin? He sort of epitomised that sort of ' Elvis ' style cool to me. By the time I left I think the fight against change had been abandoned. Nat was gone and Sharrock was in place. I can look at the leaving photo of myself and see that you could get away with dressing in a way that would have been totally unacceptable 2 years earlier. In that final year I was a regular at the Esquire though I always took my school cap with me in case I got lines off a prefect for not wearing it on the bus! All the names you mention I can remember and see their fresh shiny faces as if it was yesterday
  21. Hi Philip. I'd no idea that Nat favoured people in that way. My encounters with him were unfailingly negative. Despite the fact I won several Art prizes in my time there it counted for nothing. I remember one Speech Day in particular when he was going to stop me receiving my prize unless I had my hair cut and also the time he dragged four or five of us out in assembly to humiliate us because our hair was over our ears. The times they are a changing !
  22. Hi Philip I'm confused now. I was in the same situation as you with regard insufficient O Levels to start the A Levei year but I went from 4A to 5G then to 5MS before leaving from 6MS in 66. I'm sure that's right unless my memory's playing serious tricks with me. Any clue why that would be? Really sorry to here of Jeremy's demise. How tragic
  23. Hi Philip Looking at that picture of 4GL I realise now virtually all the guys I was friends with both in and out of school are on there but none on my picture of 4A. That's probably why it all started to go downhill for me about that time. Having to do the 5th year twice meant you were classified as a bit of a no hoper. Like you, I can remember virtually all the faces and most of the names both in years 1 and 4. I notice Jeremy Fisher on there who was always being picked on for some reason both by pupils and staff. Always felt really sorry for him. On the subject of prefects, looking at those in our year, there's some seriously non sporty guys on that picture. Yes, I remember Ian Minogue
  24. Yes ToonTyke I agree. Having JET as your form master on your first day at King Teds was a daunting experience. It would be hard to find a man with a dourer countenance. It sort of made you realise what you were up against for the next 5 years right from day one. Strangely enough on my form photo ( 1959 1(3) ) he looks as if he may be trying to crack a smile. Hi PaulSH I'm guessing you were in the same form as hillsboro. Philip, I hope you had a good reason to be absent when form photos were being taken. Report to Mr Jacksons office !
