Anyone from Gleadless?

Recommended Posts

Hi Donside 6

I was 11 in October '62 whilst at Herdings so I suppose it's possible I started early '63.

Pat Davitt, John Oates, Paul Handcock and Michael Jubb don't ring a bell and neither do Rita Walsham nor Susan Morrell.

Have been right back and read the thread and with the exception of the 'Lorraines' none of the other names ring any bells.

A bit jealous of all you others having all these great memories still

Ian

There is only three of us talking and we haven't spoke for a while. Hi Lorraine are you well. Don't you remember Lawrence Henry, tall skinny lad, used to put half a bottle of brylcreem on his hair, great lad, good laugh, he lived on Plowright Drive.

Hi there Stuart yes I’m still alive and kicking. It’s been a bad few months however as my beautiful younger sister passed away on the 3rd January and I’ve not come to terms with it yet. Time is a good healer they say so let’s hope. I miss her lots.

Anyway while we gathered at the wake there was a guy there that I didn’t recognise at first but he knew me. It was Phillip Allen. Same age as us and same year at school. Do you remember him? Apparently he lived on Morland Close while I lived on Morland Road. I can remember the name but not the face. He said he remembered me as I hadn't changed much which is reassuring 🤣 turns out him and his wife socialised with my sister and husband. He mentioned a few names from the past which rang a bell.
Lawrence Henry I do remember mainly for his black shiny hair. He had a sister called Carol who went on to marry a guy called Paul Foxton who I knew from way back. Honestly it’s a small world.

Well I don’t see anybody else rushing to join our conversation so where are they all?
I just can’t remember mad-dad but he says he remembers the ‘Lorraines’ .  I started GVS September 1963 and left July 1968 cutting my tie up as we all walked down Matthew’s Lane on that last day.

Take care for now

Hi Lorraine, so sorry for your loss, I hope you get through it ok. I'm sure you have plenty of support, but if you would like more, you could, if you like, PM and tell me what you have been up to for the last 50 odd years. I'm never too far away from  my lap top. I remember Philip Allen, by name only, there was also a Mick Allen, he lived at the newsagents on Herdings shops. Well, our respective football teams aren't doing very well, it's not looking good is it, ah well.     Look after yourself, bye for now  Stu

Aw Lorraine, so sad to hear about your loss, it's a bloody drag isn't it, getting old. What was her name, remind me.  Share some of your memories with us.  And something that always intrigued me was what made you leave Morland?

I'm here in Tenerife for six weeks again, back home on the 4th March.  Me and the wife play tennis every other day with a raft of people our age that we've got to know.  Each year someone "drops out" but hey, this is no dress rehearsal, best make the most of it but avoiding UK winters really helps.

And Stu, I have a cracking memory for names and faces but I just can't place you.  Whose classes were you in 63 to 68?  I was in the same class as Lorraine T from September 66 to June 68.  My mates included Geoff Nicholson, Peter Reaney, Keith Kidd, Lawrence Henry, Vic Cooper (he went to City Grammar as did my wife also from the Valley).

Anyway, great to hear there are some of us still kicking and long may that continue - bye for new.

Evening Bankwood good to hear from you.  My sister’s name was Sharon but you wouldn’t have known her she was a lot younger than me. Life is cruel she was the best ever or at least to me and my brother 😢 but life goes on sadly.  Sounds good in Tenerife. Why did I leave the Valley?? That was down to dad he couldn’t stand another winter on the Herdings estate. Far too cold for him and my mum 🤣. Yes knew all those names you mention can’t believe I still can but thankfully my memory is still decent. Hate to reach that day when it isn’t.
Can’t understand why more from GVS aren’t on this site would love to know what others have been up to over the past 50 years plus.
Keep posting it’s good to keep in touch.
