Phanerothyme   12 #95 Posted February 14, 2004 I'm running a little test.  I play the music on my computer and stream it to a 'Shoutcast Server'.  For this to work I must pay for a shoutcast server stream.  The stream I am renting is for up to 30 concurrent listeners at 64kbps (half standard mp3 quality).  I chose screaminghost.com as a shoutcast server because they offered instant set up, but their web site is a bit of a bag of spanners, so I would go elsewhere in future.  A shoutcast server basically takes your upload and makes the bandwidth available for the numbe of listeners plugged into your feed. It creates a file at this URL http://fizz.screaminghost.com:8022/listen.pls - which is a playlist file that Winamp and most players understand. For the link to work, your player must be registered as a helper application for your browser.   To stream the sounds to a shoutcast server, you need a player that will do so.  QCD and winamp do, they use plugins, Windows media player does not AFAIK. If you have winamp 5 go to the plugins page and search for shoutcast.  I am using SAM 2.7.9 from spacialaudio.com to stream the music, as I am trying to learn its playlist automation language (which is quite a lot better than just "Shuffle")  SAM 2.7.9 Lacks some basic features like being able to preview one track whilst broadcasting another.
