Super Casino - Sheffield loses out to ...

Recommended Posts

.... in a grossly unfair way.

OK. Let's go back to basics.

Do you consider a prize raffle, that uses the profits to buy swings for a community park, as "unfair"?

Give it a few months and it will be called 'The Manchester United Casino'

Unlikely, as it is going to be right next to the stadium where Manchester City play.

Elaborate.....or are you trolling?

Because that point has no basis at all.

Our Basil isn't far off the mark... to quote the TV news commentator earlier this evening, as near as I remember... "Some of the by-products of large-scale gambling centres are drugs, crime and prostitution"... So at least those aspects of a super casino won't need much regenerating then... A shuttle-bus from Moss-Side should be enough! Lucky old Manchester, eh? ;)

I'm an expat Aussie and I can truly say I have never gambled in my life--I saw too much of the distress it caused in my own family, especially when I was called on at an early age to help bail the gambler out. I despise everything to do with gambling and am glad the casino didn't come to Sheffield, although annoyes that any of the bloody things are being allowed in this country at all. It's a parasite industry that does nothing for anybody and those of us who don't get addicted will end up paying for services to help those who do, while receiving no benefit from the industry. And it is purely a service industry that produces no real wealth. So while the country continues to be deskilled in industries that do produce real goods and products, others are being trained in a form of work that is artificial and which will impact adversely on so many people.

Although I can appreciate that gambling can cause people serious problems, I think it is important to remember that for many people gambling, with sense and control can be a form of entertainment. The same goes for the alcohol / licensed industry.

Also, if people didn't gamble at casino's, they would find plenty other places to gamble. I think it is of major importance that staff are trained in social responsibility and how to help those affected by problem gambling, however I cannot see the individual taxpayer footing a major bill for services to help problem gamblers. If there is to be any extra costs I think the casino operators should fund this, after all, they can afford to!

i can see how crime and prostitution might be resorted to by the people who have lost, i can also see how drugs and prostitution might be resorted to by the people who have won.

how long before gordon brown trys to tax the winnings spent on prostitutes and drugs:hihi:

in the next process of regeneration

im guessing blackpool will get awarderd the first SUPER drugs den while sheffield gets a regional one (columbian/vietnamese region), and that london gets the first SUPER brothel while sheffield again gets a regional one

also they build a SUPER prison in manchester - thank god they got it eh

Precisely the reason Sheffield didn't get it. They realised Sheffield would have been the first casino in the world ever to make a loss! (then sold off 6 months later for a pound) and started again in Manchester.

There were a lot of people gambling in the casinos in Vegas, but I recon they make just as much money from the hotel, the shows, the restaurants, the nightclub, the shopping mall, the IMAX cinema and various other features.

Agreed. And Vegas has loads of other things going on - loads of golf courses for instance. Gambling is an add on activity for lots of people that go. I can't see people going on holiday to Manchester.....now if there was a tour of the Chatsworth Estate thrown in, then maybe....

All the Hype as per usual with grossly inflated figures quoted by high powered sales reps/Gov ministers Blackpool should of got it it is geared up to take on the challenge of a super casino. Surely there is only one pot of money for gambling, so other casinos in the UK will suffer I can not see many people jetting into manchester instead Monaco or Las Vegas , just to have a flutter.

All the Big casinos are owned by Yanks so it would be like having a posh Mcdonalds in Manchester, profits going abroad as usual, and the UK acting as The 53rd state again. It also shows at how inept sheffield council and locaL Buisness leaders are at challenging or winning any arguements outside of South Yorkshire. It easy to promise the earth but much harder to deliver

Its really all about connections and bungs, like the Olympic games, football etc,as we all know. But

dont write Sheffield off yet.We might have a bunch of flat hat lefty amateurs running sheffield, but they still have pals in the right places(Blunkett,Betts Caborn etc) to name a few,and if Levy will take a bung, what about the rest?
