Plans to build a new library and community space in Stocksbridge as part of a £24.1m project have been approved.

The three-storey building will replace the town's existing library and community shop.

Called Stocksbridge 519, it will also include classrooms, a cafe and 10,000 sq ft (929 sq m) of office space.

The development, which is being funded with money from the government's Town Deals programme, was approved by Sheffield City Council on Wednesday.

“Encouraging collaboration, the Hub will create an enterprise eco-system where businesses in the digital, tech, creative, clean growth, professional, scientific and technical sectors can create highly productive, high value jobs. Education and skills provision will enable local people to acquire the skills needed for the new growth sectors, and a new library at the ground floor will offer residents the latest in digital connectivity, as well as a modern library service in the heart of the town. Community space will also create opportunities for pop up banking services and other community facilities.”

Future linked projects for the immediate area awaiting planning applications include a new town square, new shopfront paving for the town square area and additional car parking.

Amazing how the Government can millions to fund projects in a "blue wall" seat in an election year.

This has been a very very very long running process. I'm no fan of the government or the council, but it's been years since this was first proposed.  Margin Booze closed ages ago to allow the 'square' to be built.

Not Really.

Whilst it is welcomed, it just partly replaces lost European Funding like that which helped build Fox Valley.
