Energy Bills.

The Government has said that energy bills will be capped at £2300 a year , but  on the BBC  this morning the reporter said  they can be more than this. . So are they capped or is this just another Government fairy tale .

The £2300 is average use, average household.

 

Bills are not capped. If you use more, you pay more.

The unit price is capped, much lower than it otherwise would have been.

 

Your bill depends on how much you use, it's pretty simple really.

I'd wager it's a common misconception as well, be quite the bill shock in store for some people this winter.

 

Bet some of the rags already have a story half written, just waiting for people to start messaging in their tales of woe.

Oh aye, the number of people who think their "direct debit" covers them for everything they use is likely to be scary, tbh this kind of stuff ("proper life skills") should be something that is taught in schools rather than guff like Religious Education which in this day and age is a bit needless.

Or is there a cap on the standing charge to?

 

Because the greedy energy companies will just raise the standing charge to counter balance the cap

 

My standing charge has gone up 150%

The "cap" is based on a notional usage of 12,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) of gas and 2,900 kWh of electricity a year. Suppliers can spread this over the unit rate and standing charge as they see fit. So yes they cant just whack it up to a fiver a day.

 

EVERYONEs standing charge has gone up the last year to pay for the various supplier failures, there is no greed here sadly.

Well the truth is that the price and standing charge can vary slightly between supplier and also by someone's location in the country, so again the use of a phrase like cap is abit of a misnomer.

 

I can't remember the exact rates from my supplier, so not sure if standing charge has risen again.  Gas went up 30% though, so it makes you wonder how they've come to the magic number for the 'average' household.

A man phoned Radio 4 last week.  He goes to people's home advising how to cut down on  energy usage amongst other things.

 

He was astonished when visiting a flat to find that the heating was on full blast, to the point that he could hardly breath. 

 

He asked them why and was told that as the maximum they would be paying was £2500, they could use whatever they liked!

 

Some people are in for a frightening shock.
