Allergies today..

Recommended Posts

Just been watching a TV interview with a mum and her little boy, and they were discussing the rules/regs/problems regarding her son's 28 different allergies.

Granted it's been a good few years since I was at school, but I don't remember anybody suffering from any allergy, let alone 28 of 'em!

I have no friends - of any similar age - or relatives who are allergic to anything, so what's altered in the last 40-or-so years?

Food preparation methods? Crop spraying? Food colouring and the like?

Social awareness.

I've had multiple allergies for the last fifty odd years. They were common then, but we didnt have BookyFace and so forth to let people know about them

The number of people with allergies is increasing every year. The reasons for this are not understood, but one of the main theories is it's the result of living in a cleaner, germ-free environment, which reduces the number of germs our immune system has to deal with.

It's thought this may cause it to overreact when it comes into contact with harmless substances.

When I lived in NZ, over 40 years ago, I had the allergy tests which involved a dozen scratch marks on each arm wherein they placed different allergens such as grass seed, pollen, wheat, wool, etc. My arms came up in solid bands, no discernible gaps between the scratches, and the doctor laughing said I was allergic to NZ.

The point being, it's not a modern phenomenon.

Your own experience proves nothing, nor does one news headline about Natasha Ednan-Laperouse dying due to an allergy.

What does 'science' or the NHS say?

My experience refutes the claim there were no allergies back whenever.

As for your usual sneering of science I'm not surprised as you've always shown a considerable amount of anti intellectualism.

I'm going to throw a very big furry cat amongst the pigeons here................

I think it's because people now just seem to love to label things, there has to be a name and a reason for everything in the same way that instead of children just being naughty, or having no discipline or boundaries from parents they have got ADHD, Aspergers etc, and how some people can no longer just be down in the dumps or a bit fed up they have to have Depression, or Anxiety or Bipolar, there seem to be so many children with 'intolerances' now to every food group you can imagine, I can never remember that throughout any of my school years and it's the same with the allergies you mention - we seem to give everything a name and then try and follow this up with pumping medication down our necks - it's all very American!

it's all very American!

I guess we can call it that, when people don't believe what is being taught in schools and what the NHS tells us; makes you wonder why so many people visit our wonderful NHS.

Not completely true, but near enough.

Or on the flip side why so many people abuse our wonderful NHS!
