Chemical spillage Asda, Parson X

Recommended Posts

Asda has been cordoned off, there are lots if fire, police and special response units up there, the word on the street is that it's a chemical spillage but not confirmed. Been there for the past half hour and cordon has been widened since initial set up...

Most probably a methylamine spillage, what with the school and its chemistry labs being in close proximity.

Apparently according to The Star update it's sodium sulphite, which can be fatal if inhaled; there are seven people needing medical treatment.

Water can be fatal if it is inhaled.

Whilst Sodium Sulphite does give off unpleasant fumes, The Star are exaggerating the risk somewhat

It's used as a food preservative, amongst other things. Oxygen's toxic too (as is pretty much everything else).

Depends on the concentration.

I see the Star are still talking bull then...

Rice is fatal if inhaled, ditto water, pure nitrogen, and gerbil fur.

unless you inhale the dust, which isn't likley unless you stick your nose into it it's about as dangerous as a pile of sand.

EDIT: OK the Yorkshire post say it's sodium sulphite without the Star's hyperbole, and the Star now reckon it's sodium selenite which is a totally different animal and not one you'd find in a supermarket.....
