Vintedge shop now converted to a Charity shop

Recommended Posts

Hi I own Vintedge and just thought I should comment. We haven't converted in to a charity shop. We have just started working with Emmaus the homeless charity. We are providing them with a platform so they don't need to rent a shop. It works well for them as some items aren't being taken to their sorting area and ultimately ends up as land fill. We can now select items to go in their shop and know will sell well in ours. Our customers are happy knowing that the items they have bought have gone towards a positive cause. Not all our vintage stock is from Emmaus we are still travelling around the country on a constant hunt! All Emmaus items are clearly labelled.

If you haven't been in yet to Vintedge there is a specialised beer shop, vintage hair salon, vinyl shop and soon to be a vintage clothes/ wedding dress / alteration service.

If you have any items you are wanting to donate to Emmaus (vintage or not!) please call them on 0114 720677

The last time I went in there (a few months ago) it was totally disorganised and full of the most awful tat - I've seen much better in a skip ! It also seemed to be staffed by weird and unfriendly people.

I cannot agree with the ethics or legality of mixing charity goods with goods sold for private gain - I wonder what the Charity Commissioners will make of it. Goods for charitable purposes should be sold in a charity shop. Sounds like sharp practice to me.

Looking at the posts it seems to me like back-door advertising.

I can assure you that as we are collecting / marketing / restoring the items and then selling them in our slightly disorganised but friendly shop we are helping out the charity. They don't pay rent for the space which we usually charge traders. The charity is selling items quickly and therefore having more room in their shop to sell more items we are helping out a good cause.

Thank you for your feedback. We are having a relaunch at the weekend if you could make it and hopefully your view will change!

I think that's an unfair assessment. Of course it looks, at times, disorganised but that's to be expected with a shop which has a constant turnover of stock, which is surely welcome: you don't to go in and see the same things week in, week out. I initially found some items overpriced but on the whole have been very impressed with the way the shop has adapted over the past year or more and prices seem to have become more realistic. I've also never found any of the staff to be unfriendly.

Finally, one man's "tat" is another man's treasure. I've come back with things people have scoffed at in the past but in the right context have shone. It just takes a little vision and an understanding of style, which it seems you lack. ;)

Other local charities have had free space within other vintage and antique centres, the space being donated by the business owner as they wish to support them.

I don't think pippadee understands how these businesses let their space to other businesses.
