Should we leave it there - Maria Miller?

Recommended Posts

Maria Miller has over claimed her parliamentary expenses by £45 000. She's issued a grudging and brief apology to the commons.

The PM seems to think that we should leave it there. What do you think? Is a thirty second apology enough for an MP who has over claimed expenses that total twice the average salary in this country?

Or, is Call Me Dave hopelessly out of touch?

He is out of touch, the only way he could prevent this becoming a hot topic is by ditching her. He has lost sight of what is right and wrong in defending her - all this does is make people even more sceptical about Westminster, not what you need when voting figures are on a seemingly unstoppable decline.

Would he want to leave it there if it was a member of the public who had accidentally claimed that amount in benefits they werent entitled to?

I mentioned this on another thread. The bit that annoyed me was that although the independent watchdog requested that she pay back £45,000 she decided to only pay back £5,800 as that was her estimate of what she owed.

The MPs overruled the watchdog and she was backed by the PM to the point that she keeps her Cabinet post.

Who does Cameron think he is to tell journalists to 'leave it there'?

Hes a posh boy who probably used his fag for a crumpet rack in his school days. No wonder hes totally detached from reality.

Don't think there was anything accidental about it!

And no, none of the MPs would 'leave it there' for a member of the public.

They really don't appear to have grasped exactly how disgusted most people are by this blatant disregard for honesty which infests Parliament.

Their obvious contempt for the views of the general public is astounding.

Not according to some on another thread..2 million +(UKIP) puts Miller in the small league...non the less contemptuous though.

You mean like the woman who was overpaid by her council via "clerical error" to the tune of £52,000, got caught and has been convicted, given a 12 month community order, has to pay it all back & do 150 hours of community service?

Granted she shouldn't have kept the £52k but she didn't deliberately attempt to defraud the public purse.

No we shouldn't leave it there. Each and every politician that fraudulently claims should face charges of obtaining money/goods/services by deception and as an example should all receive maximum sentences.

By these standards then if a thief offered to pay the money back that he had stolen would he be spared prosecution,I think not.

I wonder what would happen if a lot of people reported it as a crime with the police....
