Andy   10 #25 Posted November 24, 2013 They've just Tweeted a load more pictures of the new markets. It's looking much smarter than the old Castle Markets: http://www.twitter.com/SheffieldMkts  ---------- Post added 24-11-2013 at 13:02 ----------  Plans for the official opening:  Status Update By The Moor Market Sheffield Your Moor Market opens this Monday 25 November at 10am. To open the market a tradition dating back at least 400 years is being revived to mark the opening of Sheffield’s new city centre market.  In 1609 two officers were recruited to ensure no corn was bought or sold at Sheffield’s market until the bell was rung. And at 10am on Monday 25 November, a bell dating back to 1851 will ring out to announce that the new Moor Market is open for business.  The bell being used in the ceremony dates back to 1851 and was discovered during a clear out at Castle Market in preparation for the move to The Moor. It hung in Norfolk Market Hall, which opened on Christmas Eve 1851 and was demolished in 1959 to make way for Castle Market.  It will be rung for the first time in 54 years by Renee Granelli, whose family has operated market stalls in Sheffield for many years, and Anton Smith, who is one of the new traders at the Moor Market.  The Lord Mayor, Councillor Vickie Priestley, and Sheffield City Council Leader, Councillor Julie Dore, will unveil a plaque before the market opens to the public. The focus of the opening is firmly on the market with a nod to it's history and heritage and in ensuring everyone gets to come in and see this fantastic new building as soon as possible. The market is the star of the day (and beyond), we can't wait for you to see it on Monday morning!
 Share this content via...
