Jon26
I'm wanting to sell my Dads collection of fishing tackle soon. It's a mixture of coarse and fly fishing kit, including many raw materials (fly tying, rod building, float making). There is even a machine tool for pressing spoons, although there's no fly press. I know I can list things such as the hardys reel, Mitchell garcias and Abu 506's on eBay. However I'm figuring it would be easier to box it all up and sell it as a complete collection. Warts n all. There must be around 50 rods dating back to the days of glass fibre, and solid wood. There is even a bundle of graded wood which my grandad must have used to make rods with in the 40's for sale in his shop. My dad never had a pole but did have many centre pin reels. He was old school. I've seen there are auction sites mentioned on lastcast, has anyone used them? On a similar subject what do those of you who fish want to happen to your tackle after you're dead and buried? Thanks

Jon26
My dad died last October and generally left everything in good order. The one exception was his tackle which he only had the strength to "supervise" me taking some of it of his car into the garage. There's a real miscellany of stuff, some good, some worn, some strange ... Up to 70 years of history. I know he wanted to sort it out, however his cancer got the upper hand. I was going to sell it bit by bit, however I'm finding it a little too upsetting hence the wish to sell it as a collection. Plus I don't really know what everything is, hence I thought an auction house might be the best option.

denlin
For the antique stuff you'd be better at auction, or on ebay where you could also check if there's anything similar and see what price it's going for so that you don't lose out and be wary of selling on here:D
Jon26
The pile is slowly going down. I've started to sort through rods and need a little advice. I want to batch them up, should I just sell fibreglass, cane and fibre glass separately? Or can I mix and match? Likewise should I bundle those which seem to be just for fly fishing together? What would a sensible limit for each bundle be? Eg 6, 12, 20. Mods - please note I'm not selling these here, I'm just asking for advice from the good fisher folk of SF. Thanks! sheff 13
I tried to sell a few things through the classified on here with not much joy, plenty of interest from chaps who made derisory offers. I just put these down to time wasters. I even spent a few weeks trying to give the stuff away to a junior club which was to all extents a full set up but found no takers. The kit belonged to my wifes uncle who was a pall of mine, he died and I offered to sell it for his wife. It was a real shame but the kit that was left was just taken to the dump it site. My argument was that any tackle sold for peanuts was effectively given away and why should anyone who didn't know him should benefit from his tackle. So my wife her aunt and myself decided if it had to go it would go to the dump.
dars35
Jon keep your rod bundles to quite low numbers, otherwise you'll end up getting nothing for them Also I would suggest you sell cane with cane, and glass with glass - you'll find a lot of collectors won't entertain glass, just sticking to cane & greenheart some others don't mind, but if you mix them, you're narrowing down your target audience i'm guessing you've already done this, but if you go onto eBay & navigate to sport/fishing/vintage/rods & have a browse through, you'll soon get a feel for what kind of bundles other people sell I go on there regularly (2 or 3 times a week) as I've been trying to find a specific rod for years (it's a hand made rod built by Ernest Stamford down Attercliffe, with a brown 2 piece 9'6" glass fibre blank, cork handle and the tip ring has a threaded adapter for fitting swingtips) I've even resorted to sourcing the blank & raw materials to actually build an identical one myself (you can still get these rod blanks from Oliver's of Knebworth) I mention it only in passing, just in case you (or anyone else) stumble across on
